Remember when Motorola sued Apple for some patents and even managed to have their products banned in Germany for a couple of hours? Well, the ban part took place this week, but it quickly ended, as Apple knew to work with the situation and postpone their doom. Now, Motorola wants 2.25% of Apple iPhone sales for patent use.

This info came up in a legal brief written by Apple’s attorneys in Germany and they seem to say that Motorola Mobility is seeking the above mentioned percentage out of the sales. FOSS Patents is the source of the info and they claim that a single patent is the subject of discussion here. Apple wants to prove to the court that the figure requested is too high, using the precedent of the Qualcomm – Motorola deal. The lawyers also want to look into Motorola’s contracts with other companies, to see if they’re charging Apple extra or not.

For now, the Cupertino giant was allows to contact LG, HTC, Ericsson and Nokia to check out their licensing deals. If Moto would really get what they want, that would meant they’ll receive $15 for each 16GB iPhone 4S sold, $17 for each 32GB unit and $21 for each 64 GB unit. If you take into account the fact that Apple sold over 93 million iPhones last year. That would make a pretty good payday for Moto, provided that it comes through…

App monitoring company Crittercism recently published a study showing that iOS apps are the most likely to crash and that happens more frequently than it does with Android applications. The study was conducted during the first two weeks of December, with the results showing that iOS 5.0.1 is the most likely to crash, 28.46% of all crashes being attributed to this release.

The thing here is that this is a new iOS, released in November and many app developers didn’t manage to update their apps for compatibility with it just yet. The tests involved 23 different versions of iOS and 33 versions of Android, with iOS 4.2.1 being responsible for 12% of crashes, iOS 4.3.3 for 10.66% and iOS 4.1 for 8.24%. Crittercism used data from 214 million apps and it appears that Android 2.3.4 and 2.3.3 are most likely to generate crashes from the Google mobile OS world.

This result points towards the fact that Apple takes its time when responding to iOS flaws and developers are also to blame sometimes. Meanwhile, we all know the usual stories about Android and malware attacks, but at least now Android Market has a bouncer in place checking out the software. Will this percentage change in the future?

We’ve recently heard a lot about the upcoming iPhone and iPad, but nothing about the exact new technologies they’ll feature. Now, it appears that MagSafe connectors and wireless charging may make their way to the new tablet and smartphone. Magnetic MagSafe connectors are the ones that Apple already uses on the MacBook laptops and this tech has a pretty long history, being first introduced in 2006.

It has become a trademark element for Apple’s notebooks, that rely on small magnets to hold the connector in place. Patently Apple recently came across some interesting patents that reveal the fact that the Cupertino giant is working on expanding the magnet use on a couple of product lines. Coded magnets is what Apple is investigating and one possibility is a connector that replaces the current 30 pin dock on the famous iDevices. The resulting magnets included in both cables and device will be coded with information that will be sent when magnets enter in contact with each other.

Another thing that Apple is exploring is a new stylus technology for the iPad, with a design that includes coded magnets placed on the tip of the device. The pen can be placed in a dock connected to the iDevice and exchanges data with the unit. The magnets involved here are a great security feat, since the magnetic coding in each stylus is unique, so it only functions with a certain iPad unit. Wireless charging is also found among the patents, but let’s see how many of these ideas actually leave the drawing board and reach the market this year… since some of them sound pretty futuristic and complicated.

An insider source at Foxconn leaked some interesting details about the iPhone 5, including the fact that the device will be launched this summer and that it’s now preparing for production. The same employee mentions that sample devices are already floating around.

The common thing about these test units are the 4+ inch display made by LG, wider and longer design and no teardrop form factor, as claimed by previous rumors. None of the sample units have the iPhone 4/4S form factor and none of these handsets are final versions of the iPhone 5. iLounge also claims that the new handset made by Apple won’t adopt the teardrop design and it will have the 4 inch display rumored over the past year.

It appears that Apple is ready to get back to its usual launch pattern, with the new iPhone coming in summer, at WWDC. However, before you get suspicious about this info, know that this is the same source that was saying last year that we wouldn’t see an iPhone 5 in 2011, but rather an iPhone 4S model instead. So, this source know what it’s talking about…

Apple has jus posted its financial results for the fiscal first quarter that ended on December 31 and was truly an impressive period of three months. Every expectation from specialists was surpassed, as the Cupertino giant posted revenue of $46.33 billion and profits of $13.87a share. The company sold 37.04 million iPhones and 15.43 million iPads in that quarter.

5.2 million Macs and 15.4 million iPods were also sold and estimations previously said that 13.6 million iPads were expected, as well as 30.2 million iPhones and 13.6 million iPods. Every category surpassed predictions, for yet another successful quarter at Apple. If you want a comparison with the previous year, know that revenue was up 73% from a year ago, Mac sales were up 26% compared to last year. As far as apps go, the Mac App store registered over 100 million apps downloads in less than a year.

iTunes Store got $1.7 billion in revenue this quarter with over 20 million songs in inventory reached. On December 25th over 140 million apps and content were downloaded from iTunes, so that’s certainly impressive. CEO Tim Cook particularly mentioned strong sales of the iPhone in Japan, USA, Greater China, with the latter getting an “off the charts” demand. That was expected, as on the day that the iPhone 4S took off in China the queue was huge and incidents broke out.

With all these huge achievements and the recent estimation that Apple is worth $400 billion, more than Greece, one can’t help but wonder what the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 will bring in the future… If Apple keeps it up they’ll become the most valuable company in the world and they’re very close, since they’re in second place now, after Exxon Mobil.

Chris Youn envisioned two new interesting iPhone concepts, both with 3D displays. The more appealing one is the iPhone 6 with a 3D curved Super AMOLED screen and a hologram interface. This device is shown below and followed by the picture of an iPhone 5 design that may not be that impressive, but it still gets you thinking.

The iPhone 6 uses 3D sound and 3D hologram technology, on top of a 4.3 inch display and a curved chassis that radically changes the classic iPhone design. The resulting smartphone measure s8.49mm and uses a 3D TouchWiz UX, although I’m sure Samsung would objet strongly to that. Other specs include a dual core processor and possibly a very good camera, maybe even a 3D one. Moving on to the iPhone 5 concept created by Chris Youn, this one involves a 3D Crystal touchscreen, a 16 megapixel camera and a 2.6GHz processor. Here’s the device:

This iPhone 5 provides an incredible 24 hours of video playback, 52 hours of audio playback and measures only 0.38 inches in thickness. There’s also a bunch of nice looking speakers placed around the device, that actually look better to me than the handset. With designs such as these, Apple has a lot to think about if it wants to change the iPhone design…

iPhone 4S and iPad 2 users rejoice, as you just got the long awaited method to jailbreak your iOS 5.0/5.0.1 device easily: Absinthe. This software was detailed yesterday, but today we also get the Windows version! Absinthe is compatible with the iPad 2 running iOS 5.0.1 and 5.0, plus the iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0.

You can download the software from here and if you’re an iPhone 4S owner, know that you can keep running iOS 5.0 in case you want to unlock the handset in the future, or go with iOS 5.0.1 if you don’t. The following steps must be taken for a smooth installation: extract Absinthe and run it, connect the iPhone 4S/iPad to the PC and press the Jailbreak button, complete the several steps of the jailbreak, reboot the device once it’s done. Once the device booted, you’ll see the Absinthe icon on the home screen of the tablet or phone. You tap it and the device will reboot.

In case the site is down and you unit won’t reboot, you should access Settings > Network > VPN and turn the VPN on. You’ll get an error message, but that’s normal. After the reboot Cydia will be installed and you’ll move on to enjoy the experience as one should on a freshly jailbroken unit.

Courtesy of the guys of 9to5mac I’ve just found out that there’s finally a way to jailbreak your Apple A5-based device… After long weeks and nights of the hackers and devs behind this we get a piece of software called Absinthe A5. Hacker p0sixninja reported this and informed everyone that the jailbreak community finally came up with an untethered jailbreak solution for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 running iOS 5.0 and iOS 5.0.1.

Below you can find a tutorial on how to perform this jailbreak called Absinthe A5. This is the follow-up to the untethered iOS 5.0.1 exploit that came last year for non A5 devices. There’s also a new greenpois0n that you’ll have to use, after you download it from here. It only works on the Mac right now, but rest assured that a Windows version is coming ASAP. The jailbreak works on the iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0 build 9A334 and iOS 5.0.1 build 9A405 and build 9A406. Also, it works on the iPad 2 running iOS 5.0.1 build 9A405.

Last I heard pod2g and an all star group of hackers were working round the clock to complete a vital piece of this untethered jailbreak. There was also a video posted at the beginning of the current week showing that Chronic Dev Team has managed to get the jailbreak to work on the iPhone 4S. The new greenpois0n tool uses the Corona exploit that’s the pride and joy of hacker pod2g, so everything makes sense now. Both the iPhone Dev Team and Chronic Dev Team worked hard on this project so kudos to them.

Remember the patent infringement lawsuit that Samsung started against Apple at some point, on account of wireless standards? Well, the 3G/UMTS-based trial resulted in the South Koreans getting defeated, with one of the 7 patent infringement claims being rejected. Also, Apple suddenly decided to attack the Galaxy Nexus model, on account of yet another patent…

I’m talking about the “slide to unlock” tehnology, that bothers Apple each time it’s used on the first Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone. This is the first time that the iPhone creator messes with one of Google’s own Nexus phones, that will probably prompt the search engine giant to also get involded in the dispute. This is a reference device for the entire Android ecosystem and it’s more of a war statement than anything else, if you ask me. The whole situation between Apple and Samsung/Google continues to escalate and Steve Jobs wasn’t far off when he promised “thermonuclear war” against Android.

The problem is that Google now have Motorola on their side and HTC is in an aggressive mood, also battling Apple in courts. Samsung has already had a year full of lawsuits and some product bans, so it’s more cautious, but what about the rest of the partners? Sony Ericsson seem to be pretty chilled out about this, just like LG, for example. When will they attack for the mothership Google?

Can you imagine that we’ve arrived in an age when a hacker can reach your cellphone, hack it and then demand a ransom to make it work again? This happened recently to some jailbroken iPhones in Netherlands, with a Dutch hacker taking them over and asking 5 euros in return to make them function again.

You must know that the jailbreak not only allows you to implement any third party software you want on the iPhone, but also exposes you to vulnerabilities. The Dutch hacker I’m talking about used port scanning to find jailbroken iPhones on T-Mobile Netherlands with SSH running (SSH enabling is common for jailbroken iPhones). Sadly, iPhones have a default root password that the user is too lazy to change, so the handset is vulnerable to such attacks.

The hacker found the handsets with unchanged root passwords, hacked the iPhones and sent an SMS alert to the owners (actually a replaced wallpaper) advertising his work with the address of a website. On that site the user was asked to send 5 euros to a Paypal account and then he would receive instructions on how to get rid of the hack. It’s very likely that the “instructions” only include restoring the iPhone to factory settings. The hacker is not all focused on evil purposes, since he says that if the user doesn’t pay it’s fine by him.

Security experts had previously found that port scanning can easily get them into iPhone hacking and downloading SMS databases, listening to calls and more. In the end the Dutch hacker caved and posted instructions on how to undo what he did to those iPhones. He also apologized for asking for money and even returned the profit! Now that’s a nice guy…
