AT&T Starts Upgrading Its 3G Network to HSPA 7.2Mbps Technology
AT&T has just announced that it’ll start upgrading its 3G network to support HSPA 7.2Mbps technology this year. The upgrade will be completed in 2011 and this system will allow users to reach download speeds of 7.2Mbps (theoretically), but you should know that the real speed speeds will be slower.
Right now AT&T uses 3.6Mbps HSPA and the carrier also announced that it’ll double the amount of available frequency spectrum for data traffic. This applies to metropolitan areas and it can be considered an answer to the numerous complains regarding capacity issues, specially for Apple iPhone 3G users.
The amount of bandwidth that connects AT&T’s towers to the Internet backbone will also be increased, as HSPA gets upgraded and the carrier gets ready to implement the LTE network. AT&T is also planning to add about 2100 new cell sites all across the U.S. and offer 7.2Mbps 3G laptop cards and smartphones later this year.
