If you want a Lumia phone but can’t stand the OS on it (WP7 Mango), there’s always the option of getting a clone, that might just run an OS to your liking, such as Android. Such a device could be seen at CES 2012, courtesy of Rockchip. China-One Z500M is its name and it resembles the Nokia Lumias and the N9 greatly.

The handset goes for 159 euros and it’s available in more than one color, just like the Lumia 800, for example. I have no idea what specs this model has, but I bet there’s a Rockchip CPU inside, since I’ve seen this kind of chipset on many tablets from Asia. What’s funny is that Nokia also has a booth at CES and that it’s not even far from the one of Rockchip. Imagine the scandal if they saw a clone on display here. IT’s also funny that it all happens in the USA, the land that Apples calls home and the place where their cloning paranoia comes.

If I know Chinese cloned phones as well as I do, the Rockchip China-One Z500M comes with a single core processor, 480 x 800 pixel resolution, an older version of Android, a TV antenna, dual SIM slots and maybe a 5MP camera. What do you think of this clone?

Well, if you’re going to do a clone, at least do it right… What we have right here is a perfect example of why small companies shouldn’t copy giants such as Nokia. And that’s simply because the result will be crappy. This is the case of the “Nokla” N9 white unit below.

I have to admit that the back of the cloned handset is decent, but those speakers are totally out of place. Also, out of place is the separating area that unites the two pieces of the case, on the side of the device. That’s just a brute finishing… Also, what’s the need for those awful keys on the device? I know it has Android, but still, they could find something better.

And considering the “pimp nail” that this guy is using to handle the handset, I’m guessing we’re dealing with a N9 clone that sports a resistive touchscreen display. Sadly, such clones are sold in millions of units daily all over the world. That’s because people like to show off a copy of a great product and claim it’s the real thing. Soooo lame!

Video of the clone here:

The cloned phones from Shenzhen have reached a new level: copying a device that’s not even out, based on rumors and inside info. The result is the pretty believable device below, an iPhone 5 clone that uses all the design features speculated and leaked recently.

This clone was discovered by the Chinese gadget blog GizChina and we have here a knockoff that reminds me of an iPhone 3GS, judging by that curved design. This model is incredibly similar to the ones leaked recently and also seems to fit inside one of those leaked cases. It also has an incredible profile, being a mere 7mm in thickness.

The sad thing is that iOS 5 hasn’t been cloned just yet, so this knockoff comes with a Java-based OS with MP3/MP4 playback. The device costs $108 and comes with WiFi, dual cameras with LED flash and supposedly 64GB memory, although I can’t guarantee that. This design is not bad at all and if the iPhone 5 looks like this, then I’m sold!

The GooApple device below is actually a pretty decent iPhone 4 clone, that runs Android. This model keeps the dimensions of the original Apple handset, so we suppose the accessories meant for the iPhone will also work with it. Sadly, it’s only got Android 2.2, although I bet that you can fit Gingerbread in there if you try hard enough.

The hardware specs are also a copy of those on the iPhone 4, including the 3.5 inch display, but I can’t guarantee at all that you’ll be getting at least half of the Retina Display performance. There’s also a 5MP camera with autofocus on board, WiFi, GPS, radio and Bluetooth. The CPU seems to be a Qualcomm unit of unknown flavor.

This is where the feature list stops and as far as pricing and availability are concerned, details are pretty limited. Here’s a video demo of the unit:

Gaming smartphones were concepts months ago and now with the Xperia Play in full bloom, rivals have started appearing, at least in Asia. This is the case of the MOPS Shadow T800 phone, with a series name that translates to Phantom of the Opera. This is an Android 2.2 device.

Created by Beijing company Man and Time Technology Co., Ltd. this phone has been launched in China as a rival for the gaming Xperia. The T800 comes with a 3.5 inch display, a 800 MHz CPU, 512MB RAM, dual cameras (5MP back and 0.3MP front), GPS, 3G and Bluetooth. There’s also an emulator present, complete with a bunch of games including a version of the title Assassin’s Creed.

Is it just me or the upper and lower side of the device look a bit like the Nokia N8?

HTC HD7 has a clone out there and actually a pretty good one, that even keeps the kickstand at the back. The device runs Android and it’s made in China, a typical replica of the smartphone with Windows Phone 7 on board. The 4.3 inch display was kept, with a 800 x 400 pixel resolution, but the rest of the specs aren’t that impressive.

What we’ve got here is the MTK 6516 platform under the hood, with a 416MHzCPU, 16GB of internal storage and 256MB of RAM. Android 2.2 is the OS of choice and this clone also comes with dual cameras, a 5MP one at the rear, complete with autofocus and a 1.3MP front camera. Other common features include GPS, mobile TV, Bluetooth, WiFi and a G-sensor.

The kickstand is revealed by the last image below and design-wise, it will be hard to tell between this device and the real HTC HD7. The price for this unit is $262, a bit steep for a mere imitation…

Nckla is usually a brand that clones Nokia phones, but this doesn’t seem to be the case, since the device below sports a pretty original design, although it borrows a cloned logo. This is a Shenzhen company producing clones, but it started performing worse lately, probably copying Nokia’s lack of success as well…

What you see here is a dual display phone, with a QWERTY keyboard and a huge appeal for the ladies. Well, we might be wrong on the “huge” part, but the device is definitely interesting. It packs a tiny 1.5 inch display on the exterior side and an internal 2.4 inch one, coupled with a physical keyboard.

This is a dual SIM phone with a 2 megapixel camera and priced at 300-400 Yuan, meaning that you’ll pay about $60 for it. Is it worth it?

The device pictured below is called the H300 and it’s a BlackBerry clone with Android 2.2 on board and packing a touchscreen display.

The smartphone adopts the candybar design and it comes with a polished black back (made of matte material) and even sporting the Android logo. A 2MP camera is present at the rear, accompanied by one at the front, plus the usual WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth and gravity sensor. As you can see in the picture below, the phone also sports a CMMB TV antenna, that’s very old school, no matter that kind of clone this is.

HTC’s newest Desire model, the Desire HD got cloned recently thanks to some mysterious Chinese manufacturer. The result is a pretty decent handset, that reminds us of the HTC EVO 4G model and gets a reasonable list of the specs. For the right price, this handset could be an affordable smartphone.

What’s really appealing is the dual OS support for the device, that’s able to use both Windows Mobile and Android. Too bad there’s no camera button on the side, but at least we have the huge capacitive screen to provide all the input needed. Here’s the specs list for the clone:

Display: 4.3 inch capacitive touchscreen, 800 x 480 pixels
Camera: 8MP, autofocus, dual LED flash
Memory: 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM
Other features: 3.5mm audio jack, microUSB data port, SRS 3D surround sound, metal case

You might have heard that China started blocking shipments of essential minerals to Japan a month ago and apparently it’s preparing to expand the embargo to the US and Europe. It’s important to mention that China mines 95% of the Earth’s rare minerals, so their importance as a commercial partner is crucial.

Such minerals are used in various fields, ranging from military applications to cellphone production. The info about the embargo comes from an earth industry official from China, who remained anonymous, fearing consequences. Once the supplies are cut off, Europe and the US will be forced to look for other means of getting their rare minerals, making prices grow and the public buy more “made in China” stuff.

In the long run, we could see Nokia selling handsets with the “made in China” label, that would confuse the public over the quality of these devices and put them on par with a clone like this. Also, folks will start preferring the Chinese clones, so instead of the iPhone, that will become more expensive, they’ll choose to buy this clone.

It’ll all turn into a clone war, as China keeps the “goodies” to itself and exports finished products instead of raw materials. For now, Chinese officials deny all, but the future will show us if the embargo is real or not.
