CES 2012 was a pretty busy event, where companies such as Lenovo and Huawei got to shine and the latter even unveiled a premiere: the world’s thinnest phone. That model was a mere 0.02mm thinner than the Fujitsu record breaker in waistline, but still, a record is a record. And now Huawei has big plans for MWC 2012 as well, intending to unveil the Diamond line of handsets in Barcelona.

The info comes from Twice.com, who reports that the manufacturers will reveal a series of two phones with Diamond branding. These will come to Europe in Spring and reach the US by summer, says Huawei chairman Richard Yu. For a long while now Huawei was defined as the brand that makes low end devices, but recently they reached out into the high end segment with a bunch of products. After all, this company was the first to give its Android smartphone an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update, apart from the Nexus S of course.

I’m talking about the Huawei Honor, that received its taste of ICS long before major players such as Galaxy S II and HTC Sensation did… or better said will receive. I have no idea what to expect from the Huawei Diamond handsets, since no detail was unveiled, but considering this name, it’s either a bunch of high end phones or luxury models. Maybe they’ll run Android 4.0 from the start… that would be something!

Among the devices shown this week at CES 2012 there was also the new thinnest phone in the world the, Huawei Ascend P1S and its twin with LTE and a thicker waistline, the Ascend P1 LTE. The latter was taken for a hands on spin by the guys of androidandme and below we have the details on what they came across.

Measuring 9.9mm in thickness, this smartphone comes with LTE and GSM connectivity, a 4.3 inch qHD Super AMOLED display and a dual core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor (MSM8960). There’s also 1GB of RAM on board, 4GB of internal memory, a microSD card slot and WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 plus GPS. The power source of this LTE device is a 2,000 mAh battery and we also get a bunch of the usual sensors on board. At the back there’s an 8 megapixel camera with LED flash and ability to shoot 1080p videos at 30 fps.

No idea when this model will hit the market or what price it will have, but considering this is Huawei gear, it should be reasonably affordable, considering it’s still a handset with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Too bad that it feels kind of cheap, because of its plastic back and chrome finished edges… And here’s the hands on I was telling you about, on video:

During today’s CES 2012 event Huawei announced the Ascend P1S, that breaks down a new record of phone slimness, thanks to a waistline of a mere 6.68mm, 0.02 mm thinner than the Fujitsu handset that had the previous record. The Huawei Ascend P1 S is pictured below and packs a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED qHD display.

We’re dealing here with a compact smartphone that comes with Gorilla Glass protection, a dual core TI OMAP 4460 processor (1.5GHz) and SGX 540 graphics, plus Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich as the OS. Huawei also unveiled a sister model for this very thin unit, the Ascend P1, that measures 7.69mm and has similar specs. I must also mention that this very thin smartphone gets a 1670 mAh battery, but there’s also the option of a 1800 mAh battery, probably on the thicker unit.

Huawei Ascend P1/P1 S also prides itself with a narrow body, that measures 64.8mm and a stylish design. We also get a delicate texture courtesy of the PPVD coating and continuing to list the specs we find an 8 megapixel camera at the back and a front 1.3MP HD shooter. The back cam has a dual LED flash and HDR effect optimization. The Huawei Ascend P1 S is able to do 1080p HD video capture with the main camera and 720p with the secondary one. DLNA and quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE are also available on the handset, that comes with 1GB of RAM, 4GB of ROM, WiFi and Bluetooth 3.0.

The handset will be available in metallic black, ceramic white or cherry blossom pink starting Q2 2012.

Believe it or not, it’s a Huawei smartphone that gets Ice Cream Sandwich ahead of the Droid RAZR and Galaxy S II. Amazing? Maybe… but this is a mere demo for Android 4.0, so don’t get too excited. The fact still remains: a company usually known for low end devices seems to care more about its clients than some big brands, that will probably give our Gingerbread handsets a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich next summer.

Huawei Honor (model number U8860) is the handset that received the update, for now available as a demo, possibly meaning it’s in beta phase. Huawei Senior VP Yu Chengdong shared some pics of the phone running Android 4.0 via Chinese social networking site Weibo, thus confirming this update. He also said that he’s been using the Huawei Honor phone, equipped with Ice Cream Sandwich and if you click the XDA link below, you’ll probably find among others a PDF with instructions on how to install the ICS update on the device.

There are also instructions on how to rill it back to Gingerbread. This confirms once again that this ia a mere demo, used to test the look and feel of the latest Android on a new Huawei smartphone. When will bigger companies follow in the footsteps of Huawei? Well, maybe they’re releasing demo versions of ICS behind closed doors and they want to make public the real deal, or maybe they’re just lazy…

Huawei just announced a new smartphone dubbed Honor, a device that will come to Indonesia, Singapore, Japan and China starting December. As you can see Asian countries are privileged, so I guess we’ll be seeing the phone next year, maybe… In the meantime I must mention that the product ships in 6 different colors, for different lifestyles…

This is an Android phone with a customized UI, that involves exclusive icons and widgets, plus 3D transitions in the Music Player. Android 2.3.5 is the OS of choice and it runs on top of a 1.4 GHz processor. There’s also a 4 inch display on board, as well as dual cameras, among which there’s an 8 megapixel shooter and a 2 megapixel one upfront.

512MB of RAM, 4GB of ROM and a memory card slot fill in the blanks. Huawei Honor also comes with WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS, predictably. An extra feat I must mention is the Huawei Guard, that gets rids of viruses, blocks calls/texts when the need arises and uses password protection for messages and call logs. There’s even a Huawei Backup feature includes here…

How about a 4 inch Android smartphone made by a Chinese company? It’s not Meizu I’m talking about, but Huawei, coming with a new product, the Honor smartphone that packs a very appealing camera with HDR capture enabled. Here’s the device:

This is a single core model with a 1.4GHz, a 4 inch FWVGA display and a 1900 mAh, that will provide plenty of juice. All of these are included in a 10.9mm pack, that weighs 140 grams and we’re also waiting on a promise from Huawei, bundled with the device: 160GB of cloud storage starting from Q4, available in China, Russia and the Middle East, where the phone will be launched soon.

Huawei Honor also comes with HSPA+, Android 2.3.5, a 2 megapixel front camera, FM radio and 512MB of RAM, 4GB of ROM, a microSD card slot, WiFi and a gyroscope fill in the blanks as far as predictable specs go. Now let’s see a decent price for the Western market, too…

God bless the FCC! There are so many times when we discover new devices thanks to this authority that has to test each and every new product before approving it for sale. Today we’re dealing with the Huawei U8520, an Android dual SIM phone that was unveiled by the FCC.

This handset has its user manual published by the authority I mentioned. As far as specs go, we get Android 2.2, a HVGA display, WiFi, a 3 megapixel camera and a 1GHz CPU. 3G support is enabled on only one of the SIMs of this handset and WCDMA II and V connectivity is supported too on the handset, so we could see it on AT&T and Canadian carriers.

Considering that dual SIM phones aren’t popular in North America, I’m not sure we’ll see such an all out launch. Huawei U8520 shows up on Aussie and Chinese websites, so we might expect a release in those regions soon enough.

This model is not quite the Galaxy S II and HTC Sensation rival, but it will stand up pretty well against Samsung Galaxy S and HTC Desire S in my opinion. This model comes with the following specs:

Display: 3.7 inches, capacitive

Camera: 5MP, autofocus, LED flash, 720p video recording

CPU: 1GHz, Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255

Battery: 1,400 mAh

Connectivity: WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, microUSB 2.0, A-GPS

Memory: 512MB RAM, 2GB ROM, microSD card slot (32GB)

Others: FM radio, proximity sensor, light sensor

You’ll find this model with silver, gold and charcoal back covers and you should know that its case measures 9.9 mm in thickness, while the entire device weighs 121 grams. Huawei was keen on remind us that this weight is less than the one of a perfume or aftershave. Also, it seems that Gingerbread has been customized with 3D interface on this model. September is when we’ll see the product launched.

If you’re looking for a cheap Gingerbread phone, Huawei Ascend II might be the answer, since it’s priced at $129. This model can be found on Cricket Wireless, the carrier that recently announced this phone.

The price mentioned before applies without a contract and the device comes with a 3.5 inch display, Android 2.3 and a 5 megapixel camera. The downside to the purchase is the 600 MHz processor, but HTC ChaCha was also supposed to have a CPU like that initially, so it’s all good. You must know that theoretically this model goes for $179.99, but a web-only offer gets you $50 off.

Cricket also has an appealing plan for $55 giving you everything unlimited. Worries about Huawei build quality should be left aside, since this model has great quality, according to people who used it a bit.

Cricket Wireless is the kind of carrier that usually gives us prepaid handsets with low specs, but now they’ve actually got something pretty hot: the Huawei Glory. This model is priced at $300 and it comes with a 1.4GHz CPU.

The processor is made by Qualcomm and it’s a MSM8655T unit, while the Huawei Glory also comes with some other appealing specs, such as the 4 inch TFT display with 480 x 854 pixel resolution and 8 megapixel camera. Android 2.3 is the OS of choice and the launch of this model will go down in November.

Luckily we’re dealing with a model that keeps the stock Android, except for a bit of tiny customization, in the animation, widgets and app drawer, but that’s tolerable. Huawei even promised an Android Ice Cream Sandwich update for Glory in 2012. Prepaid glory right here!
