Lenovo Buys Mobile Business, Competes on the Smartphone Market
Lenovo is a pretty important computer manufacturer, specially if you’re familiar with the Ideapad and Thinkpad brands, but they’ve recently gotten into the mobile game, via the Android Phone available in China. Said handset is the OPhone, sold by China Mobile and making the company the number 3 smartphone brand in China.
However, in case you didn’t know, Lenovo doesn’t own its own phone business and their handset making is all done via Lenovo Mobile Communications Technology Ltd. Now, the big brand is buying the spinoff company, sensing the potential of the segment. The purchase was done via a Private Equity group, for $200 million dollars.
This move could also mean that we’ll finally get some Lenovo goodness outside of China’s borders, so maybe we’ll see a bunch of Android phones hitting the US and Europe in 2010, as a fruit of this buyout.
