LG Develops Handset Chip That Enables 100 Mbps Downloads
LG announced today that it has developed the first modem chip for handsets that can enable download speeds of up to 100 Mbps and uploads of 50 Mbps. The chip is based on the LTE technology standards (3GPP) and can be seen as a step toward the mass market 4G devices.
The new technology was demonstrated today at the Mobile Communication Technology Research Lag, that LG has in Anyang, Korea. They managed to achieve download speeds of 60 Mbps and uploads of 20 Mbps. Right now we’re using handsets with HSDPA support that can only reach a maximum download speed of 7.6 Mbps.
LG’s achievement will also boost video streaming, as, for example such high speed would allow user to stream 4 HD movies at the same time, no buffering involved. Today’s test involved a Windows Mobile LG handset which incorporated the new 13 x 13 mm chip and I guess we’re ready to step into the era of 4G connectivity any time now.
