Q2 Mobile Phone Sales Come in; Total Sales Go Down, Smartphone Sales Go Up
August 13th, 2009 | by ThryStan |
Gartner’s just published the results for Q2’s mobile phone sales, so we found out that the global sales went down 6%, while the smartphone sales grew 27%. 286.1 million units were sold in Q2, 6.1% less than in the same quarter of 2008, while smartphone sales went past 40 million units.
Mid-range QWERTY and touchscreen smartphones sold like hot cakes, while Nokia kept its market share, 36.8%, albeit a bit smaller than the one of 2008, 39.5%. Following the Finnish company is Samsung, on second place with 19.3%, an impressive increase from 15.2% last year and then comes LG, on third place with 10.7%, versus 2008’s 8.8%.
Also, it turns out that Nokia’s N97 was not as popular as you might have thought, since it’s sold only 500,000 units since June, unlike Apple’s iPhone 3GS, that shipped 1 million units on the first weekend. While Nokia only managed to cash in thanks to low end devices, Samsung and LG had a strong Q2, selling 55 million and 30.5 million units respectively.
