Microsoft’s CEO, Steve Ballmer accidentally mentioned something about “bringing Windows 8 down to the phone” recently, making us believe in the future unification of the platforms from MS. We’ve previously heard rumors that Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 will be united into Windows 9 a couple of years from now.

This is a move that resembles what Google is doing with Android Gingerbread and Honeycomb, turning them into Ice Cream Sandwich. iOS was unified all along, but maybe it will include the Mac software, too, at some point. Of course, later on MS dismissed the statements and claimed it was a “lost in translation situation”, but is that option totally impossible?

Windows 8 and Windows Phone 7 already share the Metro UI and tiles, so it will be a mere formality to unify them into something greater. MS is the kind of company that plans ahead and I’m sure their labs have a decent idea of what Win 9 will look like. The tablets here will be the game changers and if they’re successful with the new MS OS, then Win 8 has a chance to evolve. If not, Metro UI will be dropped…
