Microsoft has just announced that it has stopped updates for the Samsung Omnia 7 WP7 smartphone, because of problems. This is a temporary halt, confirmed by MS consumer writer Michael Stroh on his blog. No info when the update will start rolling out again.

A technical issue with the update package was mentioned and it’s being fixed and tested as we speak, with the status being “nearly done”. This is not the first time that the Omnia 7 has issues, as the previous update, the one in February also caused some bricking. If you’re one of the guys or gals with a defective Samsung Omnia 7 unit after receiving NoDo, feel free to post your grief below.

It’s BlackBerry leak day today, with several models being caught on camera or pictured, plus their specs confirmed unofficially, of course. What you see below is the BlackBerry Bold touch, also known as the Dakota or Montana. It’s only been seen in renders till now, but here are the first live pictures:

This new Bold Touch uses an all metal frame and in the images you can see a digital compass in action. As far as we know, this smartphone runs BlackBerry OS 6.1 and it comes with a 2.8 inch VGA 640 x 480 pixel capacitive screen. On board you’ll find a NFC chip, 5MP camera and 6.5GB of storage, plus 512MB of RAM.

As far as the design is concerned, we find carbon fiber at the back, on the battery door.

Hey folks, we’re in Barcelona right now, providing the latest updates, after a bumpy flight and some problems at the entrance with press passes. It’s all settled now and we greet Zsolt Tamassy, our video editor and cameraman, who will be providing updates from the Samsung press conference tonight and much more. He’s also proving updates for our sister site Mobilissimo.ro.

PR reps of Nokia, HTC, LG and Samsung have been kind enough to invite us to all their events, so prepare for info galore! 5 PM GMT time is when the Samsung conference will start, with goodies such as the Galaxy S2 and the Galaxy Tab 2 ready to rock. LG also has an event today, while HTC will shake the world on the 15th and Nokia decided to place its event at the same time with the Samsung happening today, so we’re going to have to choose.

Well, nothing to be sad about and feel free to follow our liveblogging right here.

Happy birthday to us! Just two years ago we were entering the telecom news segment, delivering you the best and latest concerning the iPhone, Android handsets (barely one at the time), Nokia, Sony Ericsson devices, Motorola’s rise to success, LG’s struggle to get back in the biz and more. Now we’ve got a new theme, courtesy of Alexandru Negrea and a new logo, courtesy of Robert Miculas.

We thank both of them for their help.

We must mention that we’re not alone any more, as GSM Dome is part of a network of blogs, relying on Alexandru Negrea’s theme and with different branding, as shown below. Here’s the list of sister sites, all of them from Romania (like us), some in Romanian, some in English:

Gadget Zone: Romanian site, delivers latest news on gadgets, vehicles, science and whatnot.

Volan: Another Romanian language site, this time based on automotive news, Formula 1 results, races, test drives and other car aficionado innovations.

Tablet News: This is the latest “child” of the brotherhood, a fresh face in our blog network and a much needed source of info, now that tablets are here to take over the world. News about slates, reviews and tablet leaks are all here!

Mobilissimo: The oldest of the bunch, also a Romanian content site, delivering tons of news concerning telecom industry, plus an extra: some of the most detail phone reviews in Eastern Europe. Don’t believe us? Here’s the YouTube channel.

Concept Phones: This is more of a “cousin” site, started by our editor, Thrystan. It gathers all the phone designs, concepts and prototypes one can find on this huge web. If there’s a concept phone in the world, it’s there, 100%.

GSM Dome: It’s us. You know it, love it or hate it, we deliver top notch info from the core of the industry.

Mobile Spots: Another small sister site, that publishes telecom-related commercials, ads and promo videos. Usually, you’ll find that cool phone commercial you were looking for on this site and maybe the song playing in the background.

MegaFon is a Russian carrier with a pretty hot offer these days: the Minifon basic handset available with a SIM card and a contract. You’re just required to make an initial payment of about $16 towards the carrier in order to get the device for free.

Minifon is a tiny handset, even smaller than a credit card, only 10mm thin and weighing 69 grams. MegaFon’s device comes with a monochrome display with LED backlight and a battery that should last about 100 hours. The handset supports GSM voice calls and SMS.

This is ideal as a second phone and with it you’ll get 165 minutes of local calls.

We’re in 2010 and the handsets have evolved so much, but do we remember the beginning? The video below is a tiny time travelling experience, showing just how much the mobile phones have evolved since their birth in the 80s.

More DIY videos at 5min.com

Motorola’s DynaTac was officially the first mobile phone, but there were also a bunch of attempts at creating such a device before it, with the result being handsets that only worked in cars or that required their user to carry a suitcase to power them. DynaTac became official in 1985 and we take a Quantum leap to 1996, when the first clamshell handset went live.

This was once again a Moto model, StarTac, inspired by the designs in the Star Trek movie and featuring an innovative function: vibration. In 1998, things went to a different level, since the sales of automobiles and PCs were surpassed by those of cellphones. In 1999, Nokia 7110 debuted on the market, imitating the design of a phone featured in the movie Matrix.

Nokia 7110 was also the first phone to use WAP and soon after Nokia 3210 was launched, as the first phone with an internal antenna and predictive text . The Japanese created a brand new gizmo in 2001, the Sharp J-SH04 handset, the very first phone with an internal camera. If you’re interested in records, know that Nokia’s billionth sold phone was a Nokia 1100 unit, purchased in Nigeria.

Nokia 1100 was launched in 2003, it’s got a dust resistant keyboard and it managed to sell over 200 million units. Since we’re in the statistics section, let us remind you that every year the US dumps 130 million phone units, while Europe discards 100 million. 2007 was the year of the iPhone craziness, when the first multitouch phone debuted and it’s been extremely popular ever since.

Next came the 1 GHz Snapdragon processor on board of phones, even bigger displays (4.3 inches), lots of RAM, projectors and whatnot. What will this time travel look like in 2020?

Well, technically, they’re not free, since the handsets will set you back $0.99 on contract, so they’re as cheap as it gets. Will Telus and Bell match this offer with an even better one (if possible)? All in all, this deal is great and you shouldn’t miss it, specially if you live north of the border.

Last Thursday was a day of impressive feats for the New York City Police, who issued a record number of 7,529 tickets for improper mobile phone use. All of that in 24 hours and all of them related to texting or talking on the phone while driving.

There was yet another display of police power against such violations back in May, with 9,000 ticket issued. On an average day, about 540 such tickets are issued for texting or calling behind the wheel and if you’re wondering what the total number is, in 2008 the NYPD issued 197,198 warnings for such misconducts.
