Nexus One Comes With Second Mic, Noise Cancelling Technology

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

Nexus One keeps revealing itself to the public, even a month after its launch, so now we’ve discovered that the handset comes with two microphones. One of them is placed in the mouthpiece section, while the other is on the back side and it captures your voice and the background noise, reducing the latter.

Many reviewers have found the call quality on Nexus One excellent, so maybe this is the secret behind the handset’s audio performance. The two microphone technology bears the name of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and we know the mics used for this task are MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems  Microphones).

An iSuppli estimate says that global shipments of MEMS components will reach 1.2 billion in 2013, so call quality will be divine on any handset in the near future.

Apple’s co-founder, Steve Wozniack Loves the Nexus One

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

One of the men who co-created the giant Apple recently showed some love for Google’s first handset, the Nexus One, that was launched recently. Well, saying that he loved the device is too much, since he only confessed during an interview with NBC that he likes the phone.

Of course, every major tech blog and TV station went crazy with the headlines, claiming that Woz jumped ship to Google, or that he’s damaging the image of Apple. We think the man is entitled to like whatever he wants, since working with a great company doesn’t mean that you’re blindfolded and stuck with their products in your mind.

We remind you that this is the same dude who recently claimed in an interview that he has found the solution for the iPhone’s short battery life: buying two iPhones. Quite a funny man, isn’t he?

Google to Charge Extra if You Get Rid of the Nexus One Contract Early

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

We’ve just found out that aside from the early termination fees you’ll have to pay for giving up your contract associated with the purchase of a Nexus One unit, Google wants to charge you extra. The info surfaced on Phandroid, since its editors had a good look at the contract that comes with the device.

The early termination fees will certainly dig a hole in your pocket, but Google will make you $529 poorer if you dare to quit the contract early. Let’s see if anyone reacts strongly to the big G’s decision, or if they don’t care enough to. Some people really like to keep their contract till they expire…

Nexus One Hardware Costs Revealed: $175

Monday, January 11th, 2010

A recent iSuppli teardown of Google’s Nexus One phone revealed that the handset’s components are worth $175, their prices being divided as seen in the tablet below. The handset, unveiled a week ago runs Android 2.1, is made by HTC and packs a beautiful 3.7 inch AMOLED display.

Nexus One will retail for $179, with a 2 year T-Mobile contract, while getting it without a subscription will have the owner paying $529. iSuppli’s analysis found that the Nexus One costs $174.15 to make, but that doesn’t include the manufacturing costs, packaging or software.

The most expensive component of the 17 included on the list is certainly Qualcomm’s 1 GHz Snapdragon CPU, going for $30, or 20% of the handset’s total cost. Android 2.1 takes full advantage of this solution, using a fast UI, smooth running apps and supporting 720p video playback. Next on the list is Samsung’s 3.7 inch AMOLED display, with a price of $23.50.

Third comes Samsung’s 4Gbit (512MB) DDR DRAM memory, going for $20.40, or 11% of the Nexus One total cost, estimated by iSuppli. Will this device manage to be at least as commercially successful as the iPhone, or trail behind? Its specs show that it’s got what it takes to make it big…

Nexus One Gets Dissected: 802.11n WiFi and FM Transmitter Uncovered

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

After finding out that Google’s Nexus One phone made by HTC will hit Europe in the following months for EUR 450, we return to the hardware side of things. Thus, we have a look at the handset’s dissection done by a couple of eager folks, wanting to see what’s inside Google’s “superphone”.

Inside, you’ll find a Samsung-branded OLED display, a Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon 1 GHz ARM processor and a Synaptics touchscreen controller. The really interesting fact is that there’s also a Broadcom chip inside, bearing the label “Broadcom BCM4329EKUBG”. The latter usually handles 802.11n WiFi connectivity and it’s also used as an FM transmitter and receiver.

The thing is that HTC doesn’t list the 802.11n support on its page, while Google does… We know, it’s a minor omission, but at least we’ve got something new out of Nexus One, right?

Google Nexus One to Reach Europe Unlocked, Retail for EUR 450

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

While Google unveiled its very first phone yesterday, the Nexus One is not yet ready to reach European shores… or is it? French site Le Point claims that the handset will reach France in Q1 2010, unlocked and with a price tag of EUR 450.

The Snapdragon CPU-based Android 2.1 device will also be available with a contract, that’s involve a 2 year agreement with SFR (French carrier, second largest) and it’ll take down the cost to EUR 200. The folks of Le Point also have a video preview of the phone, proving the impatience of the European public, wanting to get a bigger piece of the Android pie.

Motorola Droid/Milestone was quite a hit, so will Nexus One be able to beat its success?

Google’s First Phone, Nexus One is Now Official, Presentation and Full Details Available (Video)

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

After a long wait and tons of speculations, Google has finally launched its own self-branded phone, made by HTC and running Android 2.1. This super smartphone saw the light of day yesterday during an official Google press event, live streamed on our site here. Now, let’s see what the fuss is all about.

You can get the device from here, if you live in the US, without service for $529, or for $179, if you choose a two year contract with T-Mobile USA. Verizon Wireless will also be selling the handset in the future, in the States, while Vodafone will handle the European launch of the smartphone. Initial orders are also available for the UK, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Nexus One has its own YouTube page available here, if you want more details and if you’re curious about its specs, know that it comes with a 3.7 inch WVGA AMOLED touchscreen display, with a 800 x 480 pixels resolution, 100,000:1 contrast ratio and a 1ms typical response rate. The handset’s waistline is a mere 11.5mm and it also features a removable 1400 mAh battery, that lasts up to 10 hours in 2G talk mode, up to 7 hours in 3G talk mode, 7 hours in video playback mode and 250 hours in standby 3G mode.

Underneath the hood of this Google smartphone there’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1 GHz CPU, but the device also incorporates a 5 megapixel camera with 2X digital zoom, LED flash, an AGPS receiver, autofocus from 6cm to infinity and support for 720 x 480 pixels (20 fps) video capture. 512MB Flash, 512MB RAM and a microSD card slot complete the specs list, together with a digital compass, accelerometer and support for HSDPA, WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1.

The official press release for the Nexus One is available here and there are two things you should know before purchasing the phone: it doesn’t support 3G connectivity in AT&T’s network and it lacks multitouch. There’s a video presentation below, making you familiar with the handset’s features, but if you’ve passed the initial introduction, there’s a get started video here and a how to video here.

Will this uber smarpthone manage to kill the iPhone, or is it just another Motorola Droid brethren?

Google Nexus One Gets Reviewed by Engadget, First Impressions Revealed

Monday, January 4th, 2010

The folks of Engadget have finally managed to score an unit of the Google Phone made by HTC, aka Nexus One and they quickly reviewed it and shared their impressions, for us all to see. We remind you that we’ve seen tons of leaks of this device, but it’s the first time that someone takes some hands on quality time with it.

Quick rundown of its specs, in case you’re missed them: Android 2.1, a 1 GHz Snapdragon CPU, a 3.7 inch touch display with a 480 x 800 pixels resolution, 512MB ROM, 512MB RAM and a microSD card slot. The handset supports 3G connectivity only in T-Mobile’s network, so no love for AT&T here.

Nexus One also uses a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, taking pretty decent pics, according to its reviewers, who also loved the camera software, better than on Droid for example. The hands on experience revealed a very thin and sleek handset, a bit thinner than the iPhone, but keeping the classic HTC industrial design.

Believe it or not, the Nexus One is not the iPhone destroyer everyone thought it would be, but rather a twin to Moto Droid. “A little stuttery behaviour” was also mentioned by the Engadget folks, but also the fact that playing with apps, Google Maps and other features is very speedy and neat.

No multitouch was included, so too bad for the beautiful touchscreen, but we’ll let you get the real deal review from the lucky dudes right here.

Nexus One Pricing Revealed: $530 Unlocked, $180 With T-Mobile Contract

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

A Gizmodo tipster recently revealed that Google plans on selling its very own phone, the Nexus One, unlocked for $530, but there will also be a T-Mobile contract option, for those looking to spend less. The $530 version is, of course, the unsubsidized one and if you want a 2 year T-Mobile contract attached to the device, you’ll have to spend $180.

The rate plan applied to the cheaper offer is $39.99 Even More + Text + Web for $79.99 total and you should know that if you’re already a T-Mobile customer, you won’t be able to keep your plan, if you want a subsidized phone. There’s also a limitation of five Nexus One phones per Google account and it seems that shipping is also available for outside of the US.

Gizmodo’s tipster claims that Google will sell the phone at google.com/phone and there’s a strange mention in the Terms of Sale section of the handset documentation, where Google wants to be sure that you know the device is made by HTC.
