It’s that time of the month again, when, at its beginning we have a look at the best selling handsets of the previous month. As usual, Krusell is our source for this statistics, since the Swedish manufacturer of carrying cases for portable devices covers six continents and over 50 countries worldwide.

The top 10 list has the iPhone 3G on the first place, just like the month before, while on the second spot we find HTC HD2, with an incredible increase in popularity. In December 2009, HTC HD2 was on sixth place in Krusell’s top. Coming up third is Nokia E52, formerly on the fourth place, now followed by Nokia 3720, down to fourth place from the second in December.
On fifth there’s Nokia 6700 classic, followed by Nokia 5800, Nokia 6303 Classic and Nokia X6, a new entry in this top. The last two places are Samsung B2100 and Nokia E72. Notice that the iPhone keeps dominating Krusell’s list, while Nokia has the largest number of handsets, 7 out of 10. Also, HTC HD2 performed unexpectedly well for a high end smartphone.

Last we’ve seen the statistics and data regarding the well performing iPhone, the handset was outselling Windows Mobile devices and had a greater online presence. Now, we learn that the phone was also more used in October, when compared to the Microsoft devices, according to a recent study.

The survey regarding mobile OS market share was performed by research firm comScore and found that the iPhone OS has reached 9 million US users by the month of October, leaving behind Microsoft with its 7 million users.
Statistics show that about 36 million Americans own a smartphone, while 196 million more use a standard cellphone. Back in August, we were first shown signs of Apple’s dominance, as it pushed past Windows Mobile phones in sales (Q2 2009) and had a 13.7% market share, while Windows Mobile devices managed to score a mere 9%.
A very impressive collection of data has shown that the iPhone was responsible for half of all mobile data traffic in the world, followed by Symbian with 25%, Android, with 11%, RIM, with 7% and Windows Mobile with 3%.

The iPhone’s App Store should start to feel the strength of the Android platform soon, as the Android Market has just reached the 20,000 apps mark. AndroLib claims that the online store has doubled its size in the last five months, in spite of the fact that Google doesn’t disclose statistics regarding its service.

The statistics attached to this article will give you an idea on how things work with Android Market and prove that the platform is truly evolving. November was a bomb for new Android apps in the English language Android Market, also meaning a big gain month over month, thanks to Motorola Droid and its huge sales.

Right now, games stand for 15% of all apps in the Android Market, a bit like the App Store’s statistics, although the situation is different. As far as app distribution is concerned, 30% of the software has been downloaded less than 50 times and very few apps have been downloaded more than 250,000 times, showing the need for “hit apps” in the Android Market.
Things will get interesting in 2010, specially with the new Nexus One phone and the avalanche of Android smartphones coming. How long till it beats the App Store’s popularity?

A recent study made by Transpera, a mobile video delivering network has shown that 62% of mobile video users would rather use a mobile phone for web browsing, instead of a PC. The percentage goes down to 9% in the case of non-mobile video viewers.

The same study shows that 78% of the mobile video users get their latest updates via mobile, while only 19% of those who have never viewed mobile video are up to date on the go. Such statistics are great for advertisers, who can target their public more accurately and deliver digital and real products with more ease.
It’s interesting to mention that 60% of avid mobile video users are male and that 75% of the same mobile video fans eat out of the home 2 or more times a week. The percentage goes down to 47%, for those who don’t watch mobile video. Also, 59% of avid mobile video users have slept at least 5 nights in a hotel in the last year, another statistic that can be speculated by advertisers.
The mobile segment is a great way for marketers to connect with their customers, specially with savvy users, who are keen on intensive mobile usage, either for video or other purposes.

Apple’s App Store has just celebrated one year of existence this past Saturday and the Cupertino giant released the official statistics regarding this portal’s performance, that was quite stunning.

Over 65,000 apps, 100,000 developers and 1.5 billion downloads in the first year! That’s a huge performance, even for Apple and you should know that the App Store is now available in 77 countries and on two different device, the iPhone and iPod Touch.
The handset’s maker sold around 40 million units of these devices, that account for 37.5 downloads per unit, while each app was downloaded about 23,077 times, on average. Android Market, Palm Catalog and Windows Marketplace have a long way to go before reaching such an impressive feat.

A brand new UK study has shown that women spend no less than 4.75 years on their mobile phone, making or receiving an average of 288,000 calls in their lifetime. This amounts to 42,000 hours, which is more than the 28,500 hours of chatter that the men do throughout their live. This is the equivalent of 3.25 years and 277,000 calls.

The research was done for mobile phone recycler phonepiggybank.com and also showed that British women spend approximately 14 hours, 16 minutes a week chatting on their mobile or landline. AdMob’s recent report shows that the iPhone 3G is the world’s top device for mobile ad traffic, as the handset was responsible for 4.1% of the company’s monthly ad requests in the July – October time period. These requests went from 28 million, in July to 236 million last month. The statistics only apply to AdMob and the US iPhone users, but they’re still surprising enough.

Worldwide, things are a bit different, with Nokia and Moto topping AdMob’s charts. Nokia N70 and Motorola RAZR and KRZR usually deliver in this segment, but the iPhone 3G is catching up pretty fast. The reports also show that the owners of Apple’s handset are more likely to browse the web on the go than other device owners.
Such a positive impact of the iPhone on the ad market is important, when you take into account the fact that mobile ad revenue will go from $1.4 billion in 2007 to $10 billion by 2013.

If you were just wondering how the mobile market is looking right now and just which numbers support the telecom industry, AdMob comes with answers. We found out some new things and also got old information reconfirmed.

In the US, 16 of the first 20 devices are new from September 2007. What do the first one of these have in common? It al goes down to larger screen sizes, faster network connections, among others.
Surprising, but not that much, is the undying reign of Motorola RAZR and KRZR in the United States at this moment. It’s been like this since the two models released and still bring considerable profits for their producer as to make them not want to move on with developing new such stars.
Not even Apple’s iPhone managed to surpass Motorola RAZR, KRZR in sales. The touchscreen handset is now behind these two mobiles and Nokia N70, on number 4. The score of iPhones sold up to this moment went little over 103 millionworldwide since September 2008.
