GetJar Claims that Nokia’s Ovi Store is Not Second Largest App Store

December 18th, 2009 | by ThryStan |

GetJar is an app store that provides mainly J2ME and Flash Lite software and the company is now the centre of our news, since they’ve just accused Nokia of bragging about their own app store. Tero Ojanperä, Executive Vice President of Services at Nokia recently claimed that Ovi Store is second only to the Apple Store.

This is totally not true, as shown by GetJar’s CEO, Ilja Laurs (photo above), who mentioned that Nokia’s message is misleading the industry and developers. Right now GetJar gets 1.7 million downloads a day, while Ovi Store gets only a million per day. Also, Nokia’s service includes wallpapers and ringtones, in addition to software, so it’s not a fair comparison.

Joseph Gallo, Nokia spokesman, tried to turn things around and told Forbes that the Finns meant that Ovi Store is the number two content store provided by a handset manufacturer. Sounds like “mea culpa” to me…
