  • Google Product Search for Mobile has been a hit since its launch, a couple of weeks back and now it’s able to scan barcodes, allowing the user to get the needed results for the product he’s searching. Also, the app supports voice search for any products, aside from typing.

In order to get started, you’ll need to access Google.com in your browser and then “Shopping” from the “more” tab, tapping the “Scan Barcode” button to install the Barcode Scanner app, in its latest version. After the installation, you’ll have to go back to Product Search and tap the “Scan Barcode” button again and then select “use by default for this action”.

Afterwards, you should tap on the Barcode Scanner option and once the app starts working, you’ll need to center the red line over the barcode you’re curious about. Hold the handset steady for better recognition and barcode reading and then you’ll see a results page in your browser, matching the scanned product.

This mobile service is available in the US and UK on Android devices and for now, barcodes that work best are those of electronics, movies and books, but more will be added in time.

NeoMedia Technologies grandfathered this technology back in the mid 90’s and have been doing mobile code scanning and comparison shopping via barcodes long before any other company in this space.

NeoMedia has a rich patent portfolio that covers scanning barcodes with a camera enabled mobile device to connect to the Internet, comparison shop, and/or retrieve online content.
