Skype on iPhone Gets Rough Criticism, FCC Investigation

April 7th, 2009 | by ThryStan |

Last week, we informed you that Skype for iPhone had been made available and it managed to reach 1 million downloads in just 48 hours. However, its main flaw is that it can only be used through Wi-Fi connections and this restriction could trigger an FCC investigation.

The fact that you can’t use 3G or EDGE networks to make Skype calls caused a reaction from the Internet advocacy group Free Press, who asked the FCC to perform an investigation on this matter.

It seems that the restriction is anti-competitive, although AT&T answered this issue by claiming that it has “every right not to promote rival services”. Turns out that Skype is a rival after all, just like Verizon or Sprint, so the problem’s with AT&T, not Apple.
