Nokia Acquires bit-side, Strengthens Social/Location Services

  • Nokia announced that it plans on buying the German mobile mapping software producer bit-side and this move is meant to strengthen the development of Nokia Maps and accelerate it. The Finns were already working with bit-side, since 2007 and the German company was a strategic development partner.

    Nokia stated that they plan on offering a “social location” service, which is basically the ability of finding out where people are at any time and what interesting things happen around them. If those people are friends, they’ll be even more connected via this social location.

    Bit-side officials have claimed that they share Nokia’s visions on location-based services and social ones, so they’ll expand and evolve together. The transaction will be completed in the first quarter of this year and bit-side will be part of the Nokia Services unit.
