Nokia Develops “Mobile Radar” – a Radar in Your Pocket (Video)

Fresh out of the Nokia Research and Development facility comes a brand new invention called “Mobile Radar”. Shown yesterday at the “Demo House 2010″, taking place at Aalto University in Finland, the Mobile Radar allows users to measure an object’s speed, distance and direction:

In order to do the measurement, you just need a handset and we’re talking about the same technology that the police relies on, with their radars. In the video above, researcher Jani Ollikainen shows another demonstration of technology, by adjusting the volume on a phone simply by moving his hand.

This type of gesture control works even when the device is covered with a piece of clothing. The potential of the technology is huge and varied, ranging from areas like home security (checking movement in houses) to… actual mobile radars. It’s all a prototype now, so don’t get your hopes up, yet.
