Nokia joins the gang of 12 megapixel cameraphone makers, that includes Samsung, Sony Ericsson and LG, as the Finns seem to be readying more than one 12 MP handset. PhoneReport has the scoop, quoting sources from Nokia and Carl Zeiss and we find out that the first 12 MP Nokia phone will be announced by the end of 2009.

The handset will arrive in 2010 and it turns out that the cameraphone will use optical zoom, making it better than Samsung Pixon 12 and Sony Ericsson Satio. This feature reminds us of the good old Nokia N93/N93i, with its 3x optical zoom and the 3.2 MP sensor.

We don’t know if the handsets will be part of the N Series or not, but it’s very likely that the 12 MP cameraphones will be Nokia N98 or N99.
