Honor’s newly launched X5D S puts a secondary display on the back of an entry-level phone. The handset is debuting in South Africa at €135, with the 2.01-inch rear LCD serving as its most distinctive feature. Wider-market availability has not been confirmed.
The 240 x 296-pixel rear screen can show the time, notifications and messages, provide music-player controls, and act as a viewfinder for selfies taken with the main rear camera.
- Display the time and incoming notifications
- Read messages
- Control audio playback
- Frame selfies using the 50-megapixel rear camera
Up front, the X5D S has a 6.78-inch IPS LCD with a 1576 x 720 resolution, a 90Hz refresh rate and 600 nits of typical brightness. It includes a 5-megapixel front camera, while the rear setup centers on a 50-megapixel f/1.8 camera with dual flash.
Honor has equipped the phone with a 6,000mAh battery and 15W charging. Other specifications include a Unisoc T610 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, a side-mounted fingerprint reader and IP52 ingress protection. The device runs Android 16 Go Edition.
Secondary displays have largely been associated with more expensive smartphones, so the X5D S tests the concept at a far lower price point. Honor has yet to detail plans for launches beyond South Africa.
