Google is rolling out release_6.144 for the Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a, adding a touch shortcut for translation sessions, expanded voice controls and an automatic sleep pause feature. Some of the new capabilities are tied to the wider Pixel ecosystem: Tap to Mute requires a connected Pixel phone, while sleep automation relies on a Pixel Watch.
Enhanced Live Translate lets users start a translation session by touching an earbud rather than taking out their phone. The feature still uses Google Translate, so the earbuds do not perform translation independently, but the shortcut can make it quicker to activate during a conversation or while using listening mode in another language.

Dynamic Active Noise Cancellation is the Pro 2-specific addition. It is designed to compensate for small shifts in fit that can occur while walking or speaking, helping preserve noise isolation without requiring the earbuds to be repositioned. The Pixel Buds 2a receive the other additions, including broader Gemini control over earbud settings.
The new functions underline Google’s dependence on its own hardware ecosystem. Android users without a Pixel phone cannot use Tap to Mute, while the sleep-triggered controls are unavailable without a Pixel Watch. The firmware is rolling out gradually and can be checked in the Pixel Buds app under More settings > Firmware update.
