Apple’s iPhone Duo is days away from deliveries, and early hands-on time points to a foldable built around polished software continuity rather than an attempt to make the hardware disappear. The 5.4-inch outer display and 7.6-inch inner screen switch apps without visible pauses in iOS 27, while the matte finish on the larger panel substantially reduces reflections and makes the display crease less distracting in normal use.

The crease is still present and can be seen when the phone is angled toward a light source, but it does not dominate the screen during reading, video playback or two-app multitasking. Apple has not physically eliminated the fold; instead, the low-reflection nano-textured treatment appears to reduce the situations in which it draws attention.

At 254g, the iPhone Duo is not a lightweight foldable. It is 53g heavier than the Galaxy Z Fold8 and is thicker when closed. Still, its rounded edges, matte rear panel and uneven-looking but deliberately asymmetric frame help distribute that mass comfortably in the hand. The rounded right side and straighter hinge side did not prove uncomfortable during initial handling.

Software continuity will be the larger test

The hinge feels firm and held the device at the angles used during the hands-on session. That enables partially folded use for video, camera capture and bedside-style clock or calendar views. Long-term hinge durability remains untested, however, and will require substantially more than an early demonstration to assess.

More consequentially, iOS 27 moves an active app from the cover display to the larger inner panel without an apparent interruption when the phone is opened. Demonstrations included Netflix in a laptop-like layout, drag-and-drop from Photos into Messages, simultaneous apps and a teleprompter interface. Apple’s own apps and launch-focused demonstrations are well adapted, but unoptimized third-party apps may show black bars on the inner display. Developer support will therefore determine how consistently the Duo delivers on its multitasking promise.

The camera system is one of the clearer compromises. The Duo has 48MP wide and ultra-wide cameras, plus a 12MP selfie camera on the outer screen, and the main cameras can be used for selfies with a preview on the cover display. Its partially folded form also places the viewfinder above the controls for shooting video. But there is no telephoto camera, despite the phone’s premium positioning. Apple lists 4K recording at up to 120fps, HDR and advanced stabilization; image quality in daylight, low light and at zoom still needs testing.

The first hands-on suggests Apple has addressed the everyday ergonomics of its first foldable more effectively than its 254g weight might imply. The decisive unanswered questions are whether the camera compromises are acceptable at this price, how the hinge holds up over time, and how quickly third-party software catches up with iOS 27’s foldable-screen behavior.
