Cracked inner displays on Apple’s iPhone Duo may be linked to defective materials from one of the device’s folding-mechanism suppliers rather than a fundamental hinge-design flaw, according to leaker Kang. The claim remains unverified, and Apple has not publicly identified the cause of the failures.

Kang said two suppliers are involved in the folding mechanism and alleged that one supplied problematic materials. The leaker did not name the company, but suggested Apple could identify affected devices by serial number, potentially allowing the company to isolate a production batch instead of waiting for more displays to fail.

Apple has acknowledged that a limited number of iPhone Duo units have experienced faults and is offering replacements to customers with inner-display issues. It has not disclosed any affected manufacturing ranges, nor announced a public serial-number checker.

Reports of unusual opening noises, increased hinge resistance, and cracks accompanied by bright lines on the inner panel emerged shortly after the iPhone Duo’s October 23 commercial debut. Some users reportedly saw failures within hours of use.

The supplier-material theory does not necessarily rule out concerns raised in an earlier iFixit examination. Using CT scans and a 3D model, iFixit identified an area where a central support bar may not retract far enough when the phone is folded, potentially allowing an internal component to press against the flexible display. A part outside its intended manufacturing tolerances could affect that mechanism even if the underlying design is sound, but no direct connection between the two explanations has been established.

Fine M-Tec, a South Korean company associated with foldable-display and hinge-component production, rejected late-October allegations that its materials were behind reported quality problems. It did not explicitly name Apple or the iPhone Duo. Kang’s report likewise does not identify the supplier allegedly involved, leaving the source of the failures unresolved.
