Apple’s iPhone Duo suffered a hinge seizure during JerryRigEverything’s durability testing after dust entered its folding mechanism, leaving the device unable to close fully. In a subsequent bend test, its inner screen developed permanent green lines and ultimately stopped functioning after repeated stress.

The test does not represent normal day-to-day use, but it raises questions about the foldable’s resistance to debris around the hinge. Apple promotes an IP68 rating for the device, yet the titanium hinge became stuck in a partially open position after the dust test.

  • The outer display resisted scratches until level 7 on the Mohs scale, where light marks appeared.
  • The 7.6-inch folding display showed scratches from level 2, and fingernail pressure could leave permanent marks.
  • The matte nano-texture treatment helped conceal scratches and the center crease while the screen was on.
  • Removing the protective layer on a second unit produced a glossier image and more vivid colors, but also substantially stronger reflections.

During the bending portion, the frame initially held up, but a green line appeared on the internal panel. Further attempts produced additional lines before the folding screen failed. Zack Nelson, who runs the JerryRigEverything channel, was unable to determine whether debris left in the mechanism or insufficient hinge rigidity was responsible.

Nelson said replacing the inner display would cost about $1,000, while a replacement for the outer protective layer would cost $49. The test also found that Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 withstood these extreme durability checks better, although no like-for-like long-term reliability conclusion can be drawn from a single stress test.
