Hong Kong has been ranked first in Asia and fifth globally for tech startup potential in a study by CB Insights and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation. The assessment focuses on private companies considered likely to grow rapidly and potentially reach unicorn status.

The ranking is based on indicators including development momentum, funding, market opportunity and leadership teams. It is therefore a measure of scale-up potential rather than a broad ranking of startup cities or national innovation ecosystems.

Hong Kong’s position is closely tied to its access to international investment. Foreign investors participated in 81% of equity deals in the city, while 55% of unique investors came from outside Asia. The study also found that 84% of these investors’ regional capital was deployed through Hong Kong.

The findings outline a distributed Asian technology ecosystem: mainland China is positioned around frontier technologies, hardware manufacturing and large-scale deployment, while Hong Kong acts as a bridge to global capital and international customers. That role could become increasingly important as startups look beyond domestic funding and markets to support their next stage of expansion.
