An owner of a Samsung Crystal Blue washing machine says they restored its SmartThings connectivity in roughly two hours after the appliance lost official support. The unofficial solution reportedly brings back remote program selection, temperature and spin-speed controls, and restores a link to a connected dryer so it can receive the appropriate settings when a wash cycle finishes.
The owner documented the effort on Reddit and published the resulting software project. The washer, bought more than a decade ago for about €1,400, originally included a touchscreen, automatic detergent dosing and Samsung's Smart Control feature. Although it continued to wash well, the loss of connected features had prompted the owner to consider replacing it.
The project targets Samsung washers using the older Smart Control Wi-Fi system and is designed around local control rather than a restored official cloud service. Its current components include:
- A SmartThings Edge driver.
- A command-line control tool.
- A Homebridge integration that remains in development.
The work also highlights the long-term support question around connected appliances: core hardware can remain functional for years while app-dependent controls disappear. The code is unofficial, and restoring network access does not establish that older components have received security fixes. Potential risks remain for owners reconnecting appliances without fully understanding the software involved.
