Google Trends has added category-first exploration to its updated Explore page, allowing users to view popular searches in a selected subject area without entering a keyword first. A user can choose a category, region and time range to surface the leading terms for that set of parameters.

The categories include Computers & Electronics, Games, Finance, Cars and Vehicles, and Books & Literature. Previously, the typical workflow began with a search term, which could then be narrowed through a category filter. Category filtering remains useful for disambiguating terms, but the new approach removes the need to identify an initial query before beginning research.

The change gives SEO teams, publishers, marketers and market researchers a broader starting point for discovering topics. For example, selecting Computers & Electronics for a particular country can reveal terms that are currently prominent or gaining attention, before users narrow the analysis to individual queries.

Google has also introduced a separate Gemini-powered element in the new Explore experience. That AI panel can generate and compare up to eight search terms from a user’s written description, and suggest further directions for exploration. It is distinct from the category filters, which simply limit the underlying Trends data rather than providing Gemini-generated interpretation.

As with the existing service, the results are not absolute search volumes. Google Trends reports normalized relative interest for the selected region and period, on a scale from 0 to 100. The new category view can therefore identify areas worth investigating, but it does not indicate the total number of searches or clicks behind a topic.
