Qualcomm is targeting initial commercial 6G deployments in 2029–2030, with artificial intelligence designed into the network architecture rather than added as a later layer. The company’s approach combines communications, data processing and radio-based environmental sensing, with AI expected to help manage connections and resources across devices, base stations and data centers.
- Network planning and resource allocation
- Radio-spectrum management
- Connection adaptation based on changing usage conditions
The proposed AI-native design could make dense areas with many simultaneously connected devices more efficient by distributing network resources dynamically. Qualcomm also envisions AI workloads being divided between devices, nearby edge servers and cloud infrastructure according to available processing power and latency requirements.
Development has moved into equipment testing. In September, Qualcomm and China Mobile announced interoperability verification between prototype 6G base stations and terminals in the U6G band, the upper portion of the 6 GHz spectrum. The testing is intended to validate communication between future network components and shift the work from individual technology research toward a functioning system.
Qualcomm’s timeline places completion of the first 6G standards and the start of commercial adoption in the 2029–2030 window. Broader deployment will still depend on operator investment, compatible equipment and available spectrum.
