Anthropic says Claude Fable 5.1 can cut the effective cost of complex AI-agent workloads by up to 45%, driven by a sharply lower charge for reading information already stored in a cache. The company has reduced cached-token read pricing to $0.25 per million tokens, 75% below the rate for Fable 5.
The standard API rates remain $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Anthropic estimates that the cache pricing change lowers costs by around 25% in a typical workflow, while applications that repeatedly reuse processed context through AI agents could see savings of up to 45%.
The reduction addresses a growing cost component for developers building multi-step AI systems. Such products can repeatedly retrieve instructions, documents and prior context rather than submitting all of that material as newly processed input on every request.
Claude’s standard rates still sit well above published prices for some Chinese models, although direct comparisons do not account for differences in model capability, context length, infrastructure, security features and deployment conditions. DeepSeek V4 Pro is listed at $1.32 per million input tokens and $3.96 per million output tokens during peak periods, falling to $0.66 and $1.98 respectively outside peak hours. Qwen3 Max starts at $0.359 per million input tokens and $1.434 per million output tokens in Beijing for requests of up to 32,000 tokens.
Those figures do not establish that the models are interchangeable, but they underline the pricing pressure in the AI API market. Lower-cost alternatives can influence enterprise and developer purchasing decisions even when they are used only as a benchmark against competing platforms.
Claude Fable 5.1 is available through the Claude Platform and to Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise users. Anthropic also says the update improves performance over Fable 5 and adjusts its filters to reduce unwarranted blocks. Mythos 5.1 currently has restricted access through the company’s dedicated programs, leaving broader availability as the key remaining detail.
