Apple says the nano-textured surface layer on the iPhone Duo’s foldable inner display can be removed and replaced, creating a repair path for wear affecting the top layer rather than requiring an automatic replacement of the entire screen assembly.

Kate Bergeron, Apple’s vice president of hardware engineering, discussed the design in an interview with TikTok creator @angietutorials. Apple positions the layer as part of its approach to making the flexible display surface appear more uniform over the hinge area.

  • It gives the display a matte finish.
  • It is intended to reduce reflections.
  • It makes the hinge crease less visible.
  • Apple says it is 40% more rigid than other materials used in the industry.

The layer is intended to withstand long-term use, according to Bergeron. Its replaceable design could matter when repeated touch input leaves marks or diminishes the screen’s original finish—an especially relevant concern for the flexible inner panels used in foldable phones.

In the US, replacement of the layer is reported to cost $19 for AppleCare+ customers. That fee applies to the layer service, not a complete foldable-display repair. Apple has not specified the price for customers without AppleCare+, and the removable construction does not confirm that it is a user-performable, at-home repair.
