Xiaomi may limit HyperOS 4 to phones receiving Android 17, potentially leaving devices that stop at Android 16 without the company’s next major interface update. An analysis of internal builds reported by Gizmochina has so far found no HyperOS 4 testing on an Android 16 base.

The reported test data covers 108 of 112 devices expected to move to Android 17, all of which have apparently entered internal HyperOS 4 testing. No Android 16 device has yet been identified running an equivalent HyperOS 4 build. That is a strong indication of Xiaomi’s direction, but it is not an official list of excluded devices.

Such a policy would mark a change from the HyperOS 3 cycle. Xiaomi reportedly tested that release on phones remaining on Android 15, even though Android 16 was its primary platform. That approach allowed some devices at the end of their Android version upgrade eligibility to receive a newer HyperOS interface and selected related features.

Xiaomi’s current China beta schedule already includes recent lines such as the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 15 and REDMI K90 series, alongside other newer models. The company says the list and rollout timing may change, however, and it has not stated that HyperOS 4 is explicitly restricted to Android 17.

HyperOS 4 is expected to bring an updated interface, animation and multitasking changes, AI features, and improvements across the Xiaomi ecosystem. If the Android 17 link proves firm, access to those changes could be more closely tied to a device’s Android upgrade eligibility than it was with HyperOS 3.

A phone remaining on Android 16 would not necessarily lose security updates, as Xiaomi’s security-support timelines can continue separately from major HyperOS releases. The decisive detail will be Xiaomi’s full device rollout plan, which has yet to confirm whether any Android 16 models will join the HyperOS 4 program.
