Paramount is developing a live-action film based on Cyberpunk 2077, extending CD Projekt Red’s franchise beyond games and animation. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, whose credits include the Transformers franchise, is involved in the project, while CD Projekt Red will produce, according to Variety.
The film’s story has not been detailed. It is unclear whether it will adapt the game’s plot involving protagonist V and Johnny Silverhand, the character portrayed by Keanu Reeves, or introduce a new set of characters in Night City.
Cyberpunk 2077 is set in Night City, a futuristic metropolis shaped by corporate power, advanced technology and crime. The game launched in December 2020 after multiple delays and with widely reported technical issues, but has since built a large audience. CD Projekt Red says the game has sold more than 40 million copies, while its Phantom Liberty expansion has reached 15 million sales.
The project follows Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, which previously brought the setting to the screen. Paramount is also pursuing other game adaptations, including a Call of Duty film, while Street Fighter is scheduled to reach theaters on October 16.
A director, cast and release date for the Cyberpunk 2077 movie have yet to be announced.
