South Korean carrier SK Telecom has announced a partnership with Ericsson to jointly research 5G related technologies. The two firms will cooperate in studying and developing technologies that will become standard in the next age of communication.

The aim is to demonstrate a viable 5G solution at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics. These two major telecom industry players will develop essential aspects of the 5G tech, including small cell, ultra wide band, low latency technology. FDD/TDD convergence technology will also be studied and gigabyte level data transmissions will be performed. SK Telecom and Ericsson have agreed to keep working together on extra technologies associated to the initiative.

These two brands were pretty close even before the signing of the agreement, as they both prepared for the 5G era. Recently, they showcased 5 Gbps, the world’s fastest LTE network, in the 16 GHz bandwidth. The demo took place last week and it was pretty impressive. I wonder what Huawei and Nokia Siemens Networks are doing in the background, while also working on 5G…
