TCL’s P80 Ultra uses its NXTPAPER slider to turn a conventional Android phone into a more restricted, e-reader-style device. Max Ink Mode switches the 6.83-inch AMOLED panel to monochrome, simplifies the interface and puts background apps to sleep, while TCL claims up to seven days of reading time and as much as 26 days in standby.

The phone’s display is a 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED panel with a 2772 × 1280-pixel resolution and a matte, anti-reflective texture intended to resemble paper. TCL says the panel is the first in the industry to combine AMOLED technology with this type of matte paper-like finish. A second Paper Mode retains color, offering Ink, Tint, Pastel and Color visual profiles alongside warm and cool color-temperature adjustments.

In Max Ink Mode, the pared-back interface is limited to essential functions and selected apps, making the battery-saving mode substantially different from merely applying a grayscale filter. With the battery at 74%, the phone estimated 156 hours of runtime in Max Ink Mode, or about 6.5 days, compared with 119 hours in Paper Mode or the standard interface.

The screen’s eye-comfort hardware includes 3,840Hz PWM dimming, hardware-level blue-light reduction and what TCL calls 24H Proactive Eye Comfort. It has also received an SGS certification for natural-light-like visual comfort. TCL says text can remain readable through sunglasses with up to 95% circular polarization.

Nano Crystal Shield glass adds an AG nano-etched anti-glare layer and an AF nano-level anti-fingerprint coating. Display settings include Adaptive Brightness, Darker Display Mode, Extra Dim, Reading Mode and NXTVision image processing. The P80 Ultra’s battery claims are most closely tied to the deliberately limited Max Ink experience, rather than unrestricted smartphone use.
