vivo may be developing a compact conventional smartphone built around a wider-than-usual display, according to tipster Digital Chat Station. The device is rumored to use a screen smaller than 6.5 inches while prioritizing width over the taller aspect ratios common on current phones, with a potential launch in 2027.

The reported approach could offer a broader viewing area without moving into large-phone territory. Huawei's Pura X View provides one existing reference point for the category, pairing a 6.39-inch OLED panel with a 16:9.5 aspect ratio.

vivo would not be alone in investigating wider-screen phone designs. Rumors also point to possible 2027 devices from several Chinese manufacturers:

  • HONOR is reportedly preparing a smartphone with a wide display.
  • OPPO is reportedly preparing a smartphone with a wide display.
  • Xiaomi is reportedly preparing a smartphone with a wide display.

The rumor has also prompted speculation about a return for vivo's X Note line. The original vivo X Note launched in 2022 with a 7-inch LTPO AMOLED display and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, although there is no confirmation that the rumored compact model belongs to that series.

There is currently no information on the phone's processor, cameras, battery capacity or international release plans. Whether vivo turns the concept into a commercial product—and whether other brands follow with comparable formats—remains to be seen ahead of the reported 2027 window.
