OPPO and HONOR are reportedly developing conventional, non-folding smartphones built around wider display proportions, following the apparent early traction of Huawei’s Pura X View. Tipster Digital Chat Station says OPPO could be first to launch, followed by HONOR, with the broader category currently expected to emerge between late 2027 and the first half of 2028.

These are said to be rigid slab phones rather than foldables: handsets without hinges that use display aspect ratios around 16:10 or 16:9.5 instead of the roughly 20:9 proportions common on current smartphones. The approach aims to provide more horizontal screen area without the flexible panel, crease and mechanical complexity of a foldable.

Huawei has already demonstrated the formula with the Pura X View, which is reported to pair a 6.39-inch 16:9.5 OLED panel with a 6.68 mm body, a 7,000 mAh battery and a 200 MP main camera. Huawei says the display offers 114.27 cm² of usable area, potentially exceeding that of some conventionally shaped phones with displays approaching 6.9 inches.

Digital Chat Station previously reported 282,000 activations for the Pura X View during its first five days in China, where it reportedly ranked first among individual models for that week. That figure has not been independently verified, but it appears to have encouraged rivals to explore the format.

The reported wide-phone projects are being considered across several product positions:

  • Photography-focused models
  • Mid-range models
  • Performance-focused models

OPPO’s reported prototype

OPPO has been linked to the concept for months. Earlier reports described a possible OPPO Reno X with a roughly 6.39-inch 16:10 display, positioned as a way to approximate the expanded-screen feel of a foldable without a hinge. Subsequent reporting suggested the project had progressed through testing and may have displaced some compact-phone development work.

Leaked specifications for the alleged OPPO device remain preliminary, and different reports do not fully agree on its display size.

A more recent claim of a 7.6-inch display conflicts with earlier reports describing a 6.3- to 6.4-inch panel, so the larger figure should not be treated as confirmed. Earlier leaks had placed OPPO’s device in the first half of 2027 and linked it to the Find X10 Ultra cycle, while the newer timeline points to a later launch window extending into 2028.

HONOR is also said to be moving forward, though no credible specifications for its model have surfaced. Digital Chat Station said in August that HONOR was examining the format but had not yet approved the project; the latest information puts the company behind OPPO in the reported launch order.

HONOR’s reported wide-screen slab phone should not be confused with a separate wide foldable project that could debut as early as the start of 2027. The device discussed here is expected to be a fixed, non-folding handset conceptually closer to the Pura X View.

A wider panel could benefit 16:9 video, web pages, documents, games and side-by-side apps, while avoiding the cost and vulnerability of a foldable hinge and flexible screen. The trade-off is straightforward: a wider body is likely to be less pocket-friendly and harder to use one-handed. For now, the key unknowns are whether OPPO’s project reaches production with its earlier 6.3- to 6.4-inch design, and how HONOR intends to differentiate its own version.
