Microsoft is testing a redesigned Windows 11 Search interface that can act on natural-language requests rather than only locating apps and files. A user can type a command to change a system setting, with Search applying the requested action directly instead of sending them through multiple Settings menus.

  • Switch Windows to dark mode.
  • Turn on Bluetooth.
  • Dim the display.
  • Mute sound.
  • Minimize all open windows.
  • Arrange windows on the screen.

The effort is intended to make Search an intelligent interface capable of performing actions for the user, according to Pawan Davuluri, Microsoft’s Windows chief. Microsoft is targeting thousands of actions and plans to expand that list over time. A future Phone Link integration could also make it possible to send SMS messages from Search through a connected phone.

The updated interface is built with WinUI 3, which Microsoft says should improve responsiveness while using less RAM. Search results are also moving to a simpler list layout, replacing the larger preview panel used previously.

Microsoft is also improving query interpretation, including support for synonyms and misspelled words. More advanced previews for documents, photos, and web results are planned by the end of the year, while Copilot integration in Search is designed to provide quick AI responses without opening the separate Copilot app.

For now, the new Search experience is available only to Windows Insiders in an experimental test channel and works exclusively in English. Microsoft has not confirmed a broader rollout schedule or additional language support.
