Apple has introduced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone, bringing Split View multitasking to the iPhone for the first time. The book-style device runs on the A20 Pro chip, uses a 7.6-inch internal display, and is offered globally as an eSIM-only model.

The iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR cover display and a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR folding panel. Apple says the outer screen provides 90% of the display area of an iPhone 18 Pro, while the inner panel is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display. Both screens use the same aspect ratio, avoiding a major content-layout shift when the device is unfolded.

Both panels support ProMotion, Always-On Display and up to 3,000 nits of outdoor brightness. The inner screen uses a nano-texture finish intended to reduce reflections and make the central crease less apparent. It also houses an under-display FaceTime camera. Apple Pencil USB-C support is confirmed, though it will be enabled later this year.

Apple has used a side-mounted Touch ID sensor rather than Face ID, alongside Camera Control. The phone combines a polished grade 5 titanium chassis with a hinge containing more than 100 components and a magnetic closing system. It is rated IP68 for water and dust resistance, with Ceramic Shield on the rear and Ceramic Shield 2 on the cover display; Apple claims the latter is three times more scratch resistant. Star White and Night Sky are the available finishes.

Inside is the 2nm A20 Pro, with a six-core CPU that Apple says is up to 20% faster than the A19 Pro, a seven-core GPU claimed to be up to 40% faster, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple also cites twice the on-device AI processing capability and 50% more unified-memory bandwidth. Storage configurations span 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB.

The foldable carries two rear 48-megapixel Fusion cameras: a main sensor with sensor-shift optical image stabilization and a 2x optical-quality crop, plus an ultra-wide camera with macro support. The camera system supports 0.5x, 1x and 2x optical zoom options, while the main camera records Dolby Vision video at up to 4K and 120 fps. A 12-megapixel Center Stage camera is fitted to the exterior display.

Its folding form enables Duo Preview, which shows a live camera preview on the cover screen for a subject in front of the camera. Users can also take selfies using the rear cameras with the exterior display serving as a viewfinder. Apple’s Smart Take feature uses on-device AI to analyze the scene and automatically capture an image when subjects are ready.

iOS 27 has been adapted around the larger canvas. When unfolded, the Lock Screen controls, Dock and in-app navigation move to the sides, while the Home Screen can show two pages at once. Dynamic Island is positioned vertically along an edge on both displays. Apple says Netflix, Zoom and Slack already have optimized Duo versions.

Split View supports two apps side by side, rapid app swapping and two windows from the same app, such as two Safari pages. App pairs can be saved for later access, and Siri AI can occupy one half of the display while another app remains active in the other. StandBy can also operate on either screen while the partly folded phone is propped up, without requiring charging.

The device uses Apple’s N1 connectivity chip with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, plus the C2 modem. The modem adds mmWave support in the US. Apple rates battery life at up to 44 hours of video playback on the cover display or up to 31 hours on the internal display.
