Apple will roll out iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 on September 14 as free updates, but one of the platforms’ headline features will be unavailable at launch throughout the European Union. Apple says its new Siri AI experience has been delayed in the region over requirements tied to the Digital Markets Act, and it has not provided a release date for EU users.
The date was confirmed in Apple’s materials following the iPhone 18 Pro launch. iOS 27 continues the Liquid Glass design direction introduced last year, while its biggest functional changes center on Apple Intelligence and a more capable Siri.
Siri AI is set to gain a dedicated app, conversation history, support for follow-up questions and deeper access to personal context from Mail, Messages, Photos and other apps. Visual Intelligence is also coming to the Camera, allowing photos and screenshots to serve as context for queries.
Apple is adding generative editing tools to Photos, including Extend, which can create image content beyond a photo’s original edges, and Spatial Reframe, which changes an image’s perspective. Image Playground is gaining additional styles, including photorealistic imagery.
Other iOS 27 additions include expanded parental controls and easier child-account setup, while Communication Safety can automatically obscure graphic images. Liquid Glass is receiving readability refinements and more personalization options. Maps can create local lists for restaurants and other places, and the Home app will be able to summarize notifications and search HomeKit Secure Video recordings. Compatible HomeKit cameras can stream and record in 4K, while GymKit adds direct iPhone connections to supported cardio equipment.
The update supports iPhone SE models from the second generation onward, every iPhone 11 model, the iPhone 12 through iPhone 16 families, iPhone 16e, and the iPhone 17, iPhone 17e, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. New compatible iPhones will ship with iOS 27.
Software support does not mean every device will receive the same AI capabilities. Apple Intelligence requires an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 model and later. An iPhone 11 can therefore install iOS 27, but it will not offer the full Apple Intelligence experience.
On iPad, iPadOS 27 also emphasizes Siri AI, Spotlight and multitasking. Apple is adding a system-wide menu bar, faster window actions and file transfers it says can be up to five times quicker. For EU users, the key unresolved issue remains when the new Siri AI layer will be cleared for release.
