Blizzard has confirmed two long-range projects from its biggest game universes: Diablo V is planned for spring 2029, while a new open-world StarCraft shooter is targeting 2030. The StarCraft project abandons the franchise’s real-time strategy format in favor of a story-focused action game.
The new game is simply titled StarCraft, rather than StarCraft III. It is set in the Koprulu Sector around 70 years after the events of Legacy of the Void. Its debut cinematic shows Dominion soldiers preparing to fight the Zerg, but Blizzard has not shown gameplay.

Dan Hay
Dan Hay, a former creative director on several Ubisoft Far Cry games, is leading the project. Blizzard has positioned the shooter as a ground-level view of its universe rather than the elevated command perspective of its strategy titles. Development is still at an early stage, and the company has not detailed the game’s platforms, open-world structure or combat systems.

The announcement marks Blizzard’s third known effort to turn StarCraft into an action game. StarCraft: Ghost, announced in 2002, was cancelled after repeated delays, while the Battlefield-like Project Ares was abandoned in 2019. Unlike those projects, the new StarCraft game has an official reveal and a stated release target, although its 2030 window leaves substantial room for changes.
Diablo V arrives first
Diablo V is scheduled to launch in spring 2029. Its story takes place roughly a century after Diablo IV, in a Sanctuary where Diablo has already won, civilization has collapsed, safe havens are gone and Mephisto has returned.
Blizzard has confirmed the following launch platforms for Diablo V:
- PC
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series X/S
Rather than trying to prevent an apocalypse, players will be surviving its aftermath. Blizzard has suggested that the powers players accept and sacrifices they make will be central to the experience, but has not yet outlined classes, multiplayer, monetization or changes to the series’ live-service structure.
The company also confirmed an animated Diablo series with Netflix, without announcing a release date. Diablo IV will continue to receive updates, including an Amazon class in 2027, a Collection version for Nintendo Switch 2 and additional seasons.
Gameplay, platform details and a more complete look at the open-world design remain unannounced for StarCraft, while Diablo V’s class and multiplayer plans are still to be revealed.
