Sony has not announced plans to remove the DualSense controller from standard PlayStation 5 retail boxes, despite a viral social-media claim that says the change will take effect on January 31, 2027. Current PlayStation package information continues to list a DualSense wireless controller among the console’s included accessories.
The claim spread widely on X and triggered criticism over the prospect of a new PS5 buyer receiving a console that cannot be used normally without purchasing a controller separately. However, the post behind the rumor is not a confirmed Sony announcement or a report from an established industry source; it appears to have originated from a parody account.
Its specific date has a real regulatory connection, which may have made the claim sound more credible. Sony has FCC filings for a device identified as CFI-ZCP2, while the existing DualSense Edge carries the CFI-ZCP1 model number. Documents associated with the newer device, including its manual and internal photographs, are under confidentiality until January 31, 2027.
That evidence points to the possibility of a hardware revision for the DualSense Edge, not to the removal of the standard DualSense from PS5 bundles. The available filings do not state that Sony will sell the PS5 without a gamepad, nor do they describe a broader unbundling strategy.
Sony could eventually choose to offer a lower-cost console configuration aimed at owners who already have a compatible controller. The company already sells multiple PS5 variants, including the Digital Edition and PS5 Pro, and bundle contents can change over a product cycle. But there is currently no credible evidence for a controller-free base PS5 launch on the rumored date.
The episode reflects how plausible accessory-cutting rumors have become after years of smartphones shipping without chargers and other formerly standard in-box items. A console controller is a more consequential omission, though: unlike a power adapter, it is the primary input device required for a first-time PS5 owner to operate the system. For now, the January 2027 date is relevant only to the confidential FCC material, with any future PS5 packaging change awaiting an official Sony announcement.
