Casio is taking the launch of its G-Shock Mudman GDG-B100 419 meters underground, staging a Roni Size drum-and-bass performance at the Cwmorthin slate mine in Eryri, North Wales, on October 15. The event is designed around the watch’s shock, dust and mud resistance, with attendees crossing dark tunnels, water passages and underground ravines before reaching the performance area.

The route also includes zip lines and abseiling. Casio says elements of Roni Size’s set will be sent through slate, while specialist equipment records vibrations traveling through rock, water and mud. Those recordings will then be incorporated back into the music, making the mine part of the performance rather than simply its setting.

Mudman GDG-B100 specifications

The GDG-B100 is a rugged G-Shock with Bluetooth connectivity and basic fitness functions, pairing with the CASIO WATCHES app rather than relying on frequent recharging.

Casio plans to hold the G-Shock Mudman event 419 meters underground at the Cwmorthin slate mine in Eryri, North Wales.
  • MIP LCD display with red LED illumination
  • Bluetooth connectivity and support for the CASIO WATCHES app
  • Step counting, plus training functions for distance, speed, pace and calories
  • Movement measurements calculated using an accelerometer
  • Shock, dust and mud resistance, along with Carbon Core Guard construction
  • 20-bar water resistance
  • Dimensions of 63.6 × 49.6 × 16.2 mm and a weight of 66 g
  • A CR2032 replaceable battery rated for approximately two years

Its activity tracking is more basic than that of the G-Shock GBX-H5600KI-5, which includes a heart-rate sensor and Polar algorithms. Casio’s approach here centers on a durable construction, a low-power MIP screen and phone-linked functions while retaining a conventional replaceable battery.

The estimated two-year battery life is not the longest in Casio’s G-Shock catalog; the company also offers models rated for 10 years. Registration for the underground event closed on October 9. The October 15 set is due to be broadcast on G-Shock Radio, with a full recording to follow, while the GDG-B100 is sold separately from the event.
