Smart Communications, the most popular Philippines’ wireless service provider (44.1 million subscribers) just unveiled the Netphone handset, in partnership with Red Bend Software. This handset uses WAC (Wholesale Application Community) widgets, that are independently managed over the air.

Based on social networking features, this device runs Android 2.2 Froyo and will be showcased at MWC 2011. The Netphone is highly customizable and provides one-touch, one-screen access to social networking features. Red Bend provides the vRapid Mobile Software Management solution, that works with SMART’s software and applications.

Thus, the operator can push new services using WAC widgets to Netphone subscribers. This replaces the user app-finding process with something innovative.
