Garmin’s latest smartwatch software update gives the Venu 4 all-day fall detection, allowing the watch to automatically send a message and the wearer’s real-time location to chosen contacts when it detects a fall. Garmin previously offered comparable detection on certain watches only during outdoor activities.
The rollout covers several current Garmin models:
- Garmin Venu 4
- Garmin Venu X1
- Garmin Vivoactive 6
- Garmin Fenix 8 series
- Garmin Forerunner 70
- Garmin Forerunner 170
On the Venu 4, users can set fall detection to remain active throughout the day or only during chosen activities. The update also adds hands-free “OK Garmin” voice activation, enabling users to start an activity, manage timers or access the paired phone’s voice assistant without touching the watch.
Garmin is also bringing Quick Workout and new Run Coach plans beyond its running-focused Forerunner lineup. The tools provide training suggestions tailored to the user’s fitness level and were previously available on the Forerunner 70 and Forerunner 170.

Garmin has begun distributing the update, though the staged rollout may take several weeks to reach every eligible device. Users can check for it through the Garmin Connect or Garmin Explore apps.
