Google began a gradual rollout of Gemini Personal Intelligence for Android Auto on October 20, allowing the assistant to draw on a user’s connected Google services for personalized answers without requiring manual searches on a phone.

The feature is opt-in and requires permission for each service. Once connected, Gemini can use information from the following Google apps and services:

  • Gmail
  • Google Calendar
  • Google Photos
  • Google Maps
  • YouTube
  • Google Search

That can allow Gemini to check a flight’s gate and status, retrieve the address of a medical appointment, or start navigation to a car wash captured in a recent photo. Google also says the assistant can make route-based recommendations based on personal preferences, such as finding a restaurant with indoor seating and vegetarian options or locating a coffee shop discussed previously.

Personal Intelligence is not enabled automatically. Users can turn it on through Gemini settings on their phone and later change which apps are connected. Those who have already enabled the feature on a smartphone will not need to repeat the setup for Android Auto. Standard Android Auto functions, including navigation, calls, music, and regular voice commands, remain available without granting access to personal data.

Google has also confirmed global Gemini availability for Android Auto and vehicles with Google built-in. Personal Intelligence is due to reach Google built-in cars in the coming months; in those vehicles, personalized responses will be available only when the driver is in the car and has a phone connected. The Android Auto rollout is phased, so availability will vary by user.
