Google has unveiled the Fitbit Edge, a 17.7-gram fitness tracker that combines onboard GPS, a color AMOLED screen and a replaceable 65mAh battery. The company says the tracker is available to preorder following its October 12 announcement and will reach stores on October 27.

The replaceable battery is a notable departure for a compact wearable. Google rates the Edge for up to seven days of use, although that estimate falls to up to two days with the always-on display enabled and up to 10 hours during continuous GPS use. A full charge takes about 90 minutes, while five minutes on the charger is claimed to provide a day of use. Google has published battery-replacement information, but says the procedure requires technical experience.

Gemini coaching and health features

Google Health Coach uses Gemini to create fitness plans based on a user’s routine and goals. During workouts, the Edge can show real-time guidance tied to heart rate, speed or distance. Personalized coaching requires a Google Health Premium subscription.

The tracker also monitors sleep, recovery, heart rate and skin temperature. Its Health Guardian suite adds blood-pressure and insulin-resistance trend features, subject to country and service availability. Google describes these as trend estimates rather than real-time clinical measurements or diagnostic tools. Google Maps navigation on the wrist is listed as coming soon.

In the US, Fitbit Edge starts at $179.99, while the Stephen Curry edition is priced at $219.99. Standard colors are Obsidian, Fog, Olive and Canyon. The purchase includes three months of Google Health Premium; in the US, the subscription then renews at $9.99 per month unless cancelled. Availability and pricing in other markets have not been confirmed.
