Huawei became China’s largest smartphone vendor in the third quarter of 2026, expanding shipments 17.3% year over year despite a 15.4% contraction in the wider market, according to IDC. China shipped 57.9 million smartphones during the quarter, putting Huawei’s performance in sharp contrast with most major rivals.

Huawei captured a 21.1% market share, up from 15.2% a year earlier—a gain of 5.9 percentage points. Apple ranked second with 17.8%, followed by OPPO, vivo, Xiaomi and Honor.

Apple’s share rose from 15.8% in Q3 2025 even as its shipments fell, because its decline was substantially smaller than that of the market overall. Huawei was the only leading vendor in the reported ranking to post double-digit annual shipment growth; Lenovo also recorded growth, though from a much smaller base.

The quarter was weaker sequentially for Huawei, whose shipments fell 17.6% from the previous quarter, compared with a 12.5% decline for the overall market. Honor grew 0.9% quarter over quarter, while the reported data also showed sequential gains for Lenovo and Samsung.

Memory supply and pricing could become a larger constraint in the quarters ahead. A Huawei executive has warned that limited availability and elevated memory costs may require significant product-price adjustments. The final quarter of the year will test whether new devices and seasonal demand can offset the broader slowdown in China’s smartphone market.
