Sonos is opening its speaker and soundbar ecosystem to external AI assistants through Model Context Protocol, or MCP. The company’s Sonos 27mcp feature enters Early Access on September 8, 2026, enabling authorized MCP-compatible AI clients, including ChatGPT in supported setups, to issue commands to a Sonos system from a conversation.
Rather than building another chatbot into the Sonos app, the company is hosting its own MCP server. Once a user connects and authorizes an AI client, that client can identify devices in the system, start music, adjust volume in a particular room, move playback between zones and check what is currently playing.
The approach is not exclusive to OpenAI. Sonos says any large language model client able to work with an MCP server can connect, potentially allowing users to choose the assistant that controls their audio hardware instead of tying the system to a single AI ecosystem.
There are immediate limitations. The Early Access launch starts with US-English users, with expansion planned later. It is also designed for on-demand requests rather than background agents that autonomously schedule or trigger playback. ChatGPT support may vary as well: OpenAI currently offers MCP support with full write actions in beta for certain plans and workspace configurations.
Sonos says MCP itself does not require a separate subscription, but it does not change the terms of connected services. Subscriptions for Spotify, Apple Music or AI services remain separate from the Sonos integration.
The MCP launch is part of the broader Sonos 27 software release, which will be free for S2-generation products, though access to individual features will depend on hardware. New app navigation, Portable Surrounds and 27mcp are due September 8. Headphone Linking, alongside the new Beam Ultra and Ace Ultra, is scheduled for September 29.
Sonos 27 also introduces Sonos Fabric, infrastructure intended to let products take on roles more dynamically. Two Sonos Play speakers or Move 2 units can temporarily operate as surround speakers, while Headphone Linking will move playback between compatible headphones and a Sonos audio system. Separately, Sonos has previewed Custom Agents, which would let users create agents with their own model, personality and voice, but has not set a launch date. The company is also preparing Sonos 27voice, its own music-focused assistant, leaving MCP as the route for broader third-party AI control.
