Volkswagen reported a €5.82 billion net loss for the third quarter of 2026, its weakest quarterly result in a decade, as accounting adjustments and exceptional expenses intensified pressure on the automaker’s restructuring plans. Operating loss reached €5.86 billion, while quarterly revenue fell 6.3% year over year to €75.3 billion.

The group booked roughly €7.8 billion in exceptional charges during the quarter, including writedowns tied to Porsche and assets in China as its business outlook weakened. The accounting adjustments do not entirely represent cash leaving the company during the three-month period, but they reflect lower expectations for future earnings.

Volkswagen is also contending with US tariffs, price competition and thinner margins on electric vehicles than on internal-combustion models. Its position has been pressured by lost ground in China and increasingly tough competition in Europe.

Job cuts and factory allocations under review

The restructuring combines measures already agreed in Germany with an additional group-wide workforce plan. Reuters reported that the total number of jobs under consideration could reach about 100,000 across Volkswagen.

  • More than 35,000 jobs are set to be phased out in Germany by 2030 under an agreement reached with employee representatives in December 2024.
  • A separate new plan calls for roughly 50,000 additional workforce reductions, including management roles, beyond existing programs.
  • The total scale of job cuts being considered across the group is about 100,000 positions, according to Reuters.

Future production allocations are uncertain at several German sites. Volkswagen has said it cannot currently guarantee competitive production assignments for the 2031–2034 period and is examining alternative uses for the facilities.

Volkswagen estimates that its European factories have capacity for about 500,000 more vehicles than demand requires. The excess comes as the company continues to fund new models and technologies. Group vehicle sales totaled about 5.9 million units in the first nine months of 2026, down 11% from the same period a year earlier, leaving future factory allocations as a central unresolved part of the overhaul.
