Google is testing “Dive deeper,” an AI-powered feature in Discover that can generate expanded topic summaries from multiple sources on the web. The tool could let users get broader context directly inside the Discover feed rather than opening several individual articles.
Users who see the test can tap a “Dive deeper” button to receive additional information on a story. Google’s approach is based on the AI Overviews technology already used in Google Search, with the stated aim of making it easier to explore topics and find relevant material in one place.
For publishers, the experiment adds to concerns around AI-generated answers in Google products. A sufficiently detailed summary in Discover could reduce the need for readers to visit the original reporting, potentially affecting referral traffic and the advertising revenue tied to it.
Dive deeper is currently in testing and is not available to all users. Google has not confirmed a wider rollout timetable, leaving its eventual impact on Discover traffic and publisher referrals unclear.
