QNAP has announced the TS-h966TX, a desktop NAS designed to give media teams direct Thunderbolt 4 access alongside shared 10GbE storage. The nine-bay system combines five 3.5-inch SATA bays for high-capacity hard drives with four 2.5-inch U.2 NVMe slots for faster SSD storage, targeting large video projects on Mac and Windows systems.

Rather than operating as a simple Thunderbolt enclosure, the TS-h966TX is a full NAS with an Intel Core i3 processor, QuTS hero operating system and ZFS file system. Its two Thunderbolt 4 ports support direct connection to a Mac or PC, although QNAP rates throughput over that connection at up to 20 Gbps rather than the interface’s 40 Gbps theoretical maximum.

In QNAP’s own testing, a configuration with four 1.96TB Samsung PM9A3 U.2 SSDs in RAID 5 and a MacBook Pro with M4 Pro reached 2,252 MB/s write speeds and 2,004 MB/s reads over Thunderbolt 4. The company reported approximately 1,182 MB/s writes and 1,181 MB/s reads over 10GbE. These are vendor laboratory figures, and performance will depend heavily on the installed drives and RAID configuration; a hard-drive-only setup will not deliver the same results.

QNAP says the hardware can move 1TB of 4K footage in around 10 minutes under a sufficiently fast storage configuration. The mixed-storage design is intended to let users retain bulk archives on HDDs while placing active projects, cache data or a separate storage pool on U.2 SSDs. M.2 NVMe SSDs are also supported through QNAP’s optional QDA-UMP4A adapter.

  • Memory: 8GB DDR5 SODIMM installed, expandable to 64GB via two slots
  • Storage: five 3.5-inch SATA bays and four 2.5-inch U.2 NVMe slots
  • Direct connectivity: two Thunderbolt 4 ports
  • Networking: one 10GBASE-T port and one 2.5GbE port
  • USB: two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports at 10Gbps and one USB 2.0 port
  • Display output: HDMI supporting up to 4K at 60Hz
  • Dimensions and weight: 182.7 × 224.6 × 223.6 mm; 3.57kg without drives
  • Warranty: three years

QuTS hero brings ZFS-based data services including snapshots, compression, deduplication and WORM capabilities, while Qtier can automatically move data between HDD and SSD tiers. QNAP also highlights Qsirch indexing and RAG Search, which can pair searches across locally stored documents and files with a locally run language model for natural-language queries.

The TS-h966TX is positioned above more conventional desktop NAS hardware by pairing direct-attached workstation storage with network access for other collaborators. QNAP says the enclosure is 36% smaller than its previous six-bay Thunderbolt 4 NAS models, but it has not provided pricing or broad market availability details in the supplied announcement.
