Ring has announced its first smart lock, built around a manual Power Dial intended to prevent a dead battery from leaving users locked out. Turning the exterior dial generates enough electricity to restart the lock for authentication and opening, removing the need for a physical backup key or an external power source at the door.
The Power Dial is a user-operated generator rather than a way to fully recharge the lock. Reports indicate that roughly five to 10 turns may provide sufficient power, depending on the speed and range of the motion; a green indicator shows when the lock has enough energy to authenticate and open. Ring founder Jamie Siminoff estimates battery life at about one year, and Ring says the lock’s functions will not require a subscription.
- Fingerprint reader
- Illuminated touch keypad
- Ring app
- Alexa

The lock also supports time-limited access for other people and uses Amazon Sidewalk for remote connectivity, rather than relying on the home’s Wi-Fi connection. It is designed to integrate with Ring doorbells, cameras and alarm systems, with no additional wiring required for installation.
Ring Smart Lock is set to launch in the US in early 2027 at $249. It will be offered in black, silver and brass finishes, although sales remain subject to FCC authorization. Ring has not announced an international release schedule.
